Our little family is soon to be relocating to the Gold Coast. Please tell me - snake danger? Spider danger? Is it safe to live on the Gold Coast? We are looking for a better way of life, but am afraid of looking over my shoulder for a snake, spider attack. My son is young and we would like another little person in the near future. is this a good move?

Are you a new zealander too?
Because I am too!
and practically every 1/3 person is here.

Gold coast is PERFECT.
no snakes, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas unless youre out back.
education, health, you could ask for nothing more.
but, must i say.

strongly racist.
a lot of cultural attitudes that segregates the hispanic (a.k.a "wogs"), middle eastern, black, asian, etc.

You may live here all your life and never see a snake. I've seen one in the last 10 years. That doesn't mean to say they aren't there. If you keep your garden clear from heavy growth they won't want to stay with you. As for Spiders I've seen a few Red Backs . but don't know of anyone ever being bitten by one. If you have outdoor furniture,it pays to keep an eye on cobwebs. their cob webs are a little different to some spiders but just spray if you see any. The dangers are very minimal. I think it's a good move for you but that all depends on work I guess. There is a lot of opportunity here . I'm a Kiwi that has lived here for years and also lived in other countries. I love it and wouldn't leave. Where ever you live there is no guarantees that live will go 100% of what you want it to be. One always has to work their way to a better future. Good luck

Gold Coast Safety

The Gold Coast is a safe place to live.

It is largely developed city so the main dangers are over-eating a western diet (with consequent heart disease, diabetes, etc) and motor vehicular accidents.

Snakes can sometimes be a nuisance during hot weather. Spiders are not much of a problem.

In the water, the most dangerous things are the jellyfish. Pay attention to the signs and you should be fine. Shark attacks are rare.

When out sightseeing - inland in the "Australian Outback" or in the coastal regions, always pay attention to the signs and to the safety advice from tour guides.

We have spiders and snakes but it is not like you will be walking all over them. Urban areas are pretty much "urban" so you won't see any snakes. Spiders? keep you house tidy and you won't have any problem.
It is more like keeping common sense. Don't put your hand in nooks and crannies and places you can't see. If you have to - then wear gloves.

It is pretty much a stereotype and misconception that we are literally crawling with them on the streets and in our backyards.

Of course you will be safe as long as you watch out for the drop bears. To see them go to this site http://mermbers.ozemail.com.au/-enigman/dropbear.html or google DROP BEARS.

good luck
