The way people visit shrines in Pakistan or in India, I'm totally against it.
Visiting the tombs or graveyards is not a mistake if it is done according to the purpose for which it was legislated. That purpose is the exhortation, the recollection as well as the supplication for those who are dead. And if all this is done according to the Sharia rules in this matter. Imam Muslim narrated from the Hadith of Buraidah that the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u..h) said: "I have told you before not to visit graves, now visit them indeed". Abu Dawood and Nasai added from the Hadith of Anas ( may Allaah be pleased with him): "They remind you of the Last Day". al-Hakem also added in his narration " They soften the heart (by bringing pity to it) and fill the eyes with tears. But not say any bad words there". Muslim also narrated from the Hadith of Abu Hurairah: "They remind of death".

If you are to follow the above rules, then you should visit but mourning or asking them to pray to Allah, I really could never appreciate it. No~!

Edit: wohi,, that's non-sense!!

The grave should be a place to remember death and the hear after not a place of worship.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter." (Narrated by Muslim, 976).

SubhanAllah what is wrong with people praying to the dead. Little do they know.

"And who is more astray than one who calls on (invokes) besides Allâh, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them? And when mankind are gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), they (false deities) will become their enemies and will deny their worshipping"

I dont think that Muslims that visit graves and pray r praying 'to' the graves. I think they r praying to Allah for that person or talking to that person.
Why would that be a bad thing and something would have to happen to them?

like others said, its completely fine to have funerals, visit a loved one at a graveyard, and read fatehas for the dead.
When i was in catholic school, I learned that some christians literally pray to their saints instead of God. How can you ask forgiveness from a dead human being?
What drives me even more crazy is their "confession" idea..thats pretty bizarre.

The dead man's LIVING SOUL will and can help the living as Allah Taala allows them to. Asking for the dead's soul to help us, as the SAME as asking help from someone alive. They may or may not help us, cos the reality (Haqiqah) of help truly only comes from Allah Taala.

All makhluq (creations) and instruments are only asbab (means) that Allah Taala uses to dispense His Help to whomever He Wishes.

Asking Allah Taala through Rasulullah saaw, His Ahl Bayt, Sahabis and Awliyas (Saints) and Holy Persons are all wasilah (means) to Allah Taala, and it is Rasulullah's sunnah to seek wasilah and mediation that is good. Various ahadis related how the Holy Messenger taught us to do it, and that how it is allowed to seek wasilah from pious persons whether they are dead or alive.

Even Allah Taala utilises Gabriel a.s as a wasilah to send down revelations to the Holy Messenger saaw.

It seems at the very least to be very close to idol worship which is haram.

I remember reading of what was siad at the time of the Prophets (sallaahu 'alaihi waslaam) death, "He is dead. Will you now abandon Islam? Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala, is Everlasting and Self Sustaining. Do you follow the directions, teachings and revelations of Allah (swt) or did you only follow Muhammad(saw)? (Please forgive my poor paraphrasing).

Insha'Allah, I will choose to follow the revealtions, teachings and direction of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala. I will serve only He and I will seek only His aid.

Ma'a salaam.

Jazak'Allah, Maria

Define to the grave. If you are talking about shia, then we worshipe one God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God, is that why the wahabi are building a car park in the site of the birth of the prophet, is that why they have haram police next to the grave of the prophet, and our Imams, your sick you know that, your probably some bin ladin salafi wahabis jehadist wanna be.

I don't approve of them and to those who do please go and reflect on Tawheed (",)

We can not ask the dead to forgive us and help us Allah (swt) is only our helper. My family used to believe in this alot, but Alhamdulillah their hearts are humbled and are seeing the truth.
