Does Gortex or any other modern lightweight material actually remain waterproof and keep you dry even after several hours in the pouring rain?

Does Gortex loose it's ability to repel water after it ages?

I live in a commercial fishing town and I've noticed all the professional fishermen still wear the old-fashioned rubber rain suits. Makes me wonder(?).

The disadvantage of rubber is that it doesn't "breath", so you eventually get damp or wet from your own perspiration.

Gortex is good in the rain, but if the water is rubbed into the fabric as in walking through high wet vegetation, the water will eventually come through, while with rubber it will not. The seams of Goretex clothing may also begin to leak after several years of use.

There is a new product now available in clothing called "Frogg Toggs" or something similar which appears to be better and lighter weight than Goretex. This clothing is available in large sporting goods stores. I've seen rain-suits advertised at some at web sites for about $40 to $60. Although I've not yet tried them, They have been strongly recommended to me by outdoorsman friends who have.
