the train is private property, so yes it can be illegal especially if they are caught the railroad prosecutes. No ticket no ride. I live near railroad tracks and have actually seen people sitting in the door of empty box cars. I guess its pretty amazing what some people will do.

There was another question like this in the Safety catagory. Nowadays it's not done often and it's very dangerous. They design the Frieght Cars to deny people riding along. But to answer your question yeah it's illegal.

Of course it's illegal... you're riding without a ticket, and in the USA today you're opening the railroad to a lawsuit from your family if you're injured or die.

Not sure which movies YOU watched... try watching "Emperor of the North Pole". A movie all about hobo's trying to ride a train, and the conductor who beats those who try to ride him

Ah yes, the romantic notion of "down on their luck" civilized vagrants riding the rods and sharing their hobo stew with you. That might have existed during the Great Depression, but it's certainly long gone now. Nowdays, the people on freight trains are criminals - at best, illegal immigrants - at worst, drug runners who will kill you in a heartbeat.
