royal racer nailed it.
God's Word abounds with figures of speech, symbolism, Hebraisms, metaphors, and types (the seven churches in the Book of Revelation).
On the one hand, if I said to you, I'm going to paint the town red tonight, you would probably understand this figure of speech.
On the other hand, if I said the above to someone from China, for instants, he might think I'm going to grab a bucket of red paint, a brush, and paint the town red.
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life (Christ) also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Satan). Genesis 2:9
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent (Satan) beguiled me (wholly seduced ... took her virginity) and I did eat. Genesis 3:13

that's a good question. i think the tree is a representation of the nature of god, or the choices god gives us. not that god is evil, but god being good, understands evil and allows it for a time. why was it there? there was something supernatural to it according to genesis or else it wouldn't have had the effect that it did. was it a real tree? it might be a metaphor. but real or not, i think it also served as a way to create a situation for man. when god created adam and eve, he knew beforehand what they were going to do, yet he created them anyways. also, he knew that man would "fall" and become sinful. so i think the tree represents a way for man to exercise his will to either accept god and love him because he wants to, or to ignore him and refuse him. i might also note that while adam and eve were in eden they were "perfect," but they still had the capacity to fall from grace. this is why god knew ahead of time, that he would ultimately send himself to redeem any who might choose so, to be restored permanently by the works of jesus christ. once done, man is perfected and cannot fall again because the perfection lies with god and not of man's own works. this perfection in a spiritual sense, and while we don't see the results of it yet, we count it as true and accomplished knowing that when we join him we shall have it.
yeah, my answer is theological, but it's better than the sarcasm you got. maybe it helped.

Do they really have a choice of free will if they had no knowledge of telling good from bad to begin with?
Free will only exists if one can judge what his actions will result in.
A dog is a good example. Will a dog eat your dog food if you lay it in a garden where he roams free?
Why humans have no capacity to think and reason is another good question. I'm really puzzle about the supposedly intelligent human mind. Something is wrong with the human mind somehow.

To find out if they Would Obey...............so then he wouldn't have had to come later in the flesh and die for our sins.
As you will note throughout the Old Testament they wouldn't Obey even through experience.
So in the New Testament he decided to come in the flesh as Jesus, being without sin for the forgiveness of our sins.
If we are truly sorry for them.
When we love God and want to be right with him more than anything else in the word...that kind of sorry. With that comes love for Him accompanied by Obedience which show we mean it.

It's just a colorful fable and as jewish mythology goes a lot less morbid than most of it. It should be read in the same spirit we read Roman mythology.
