I was invited to a relative's house for dinner the other day. Some small dark brown meat medallions were served. It didn't quite taste like beef - I suspect it was venison. I know his son does go hunting. I felt uncomfortable about asking what meat it was, that would be like saying "This meat tastes strange." Should I have been so direct? Is there a way to tell between these meats?

Venison medalions are wonderful and lean too. But it doesn't have that gamey taste which put some people off.
All you need to say to your hostess is that was lovely was it venison and can you give me the recipe. Venison is best served with really good gravy and mashed potatoes, and something sweetish in the gravy like port. You lucky devil, I haven't got venison for ages and love it. Here in Scotland, we do replace beef for venison and it is considered a treat.
Keep well in with your relatives and compliment all the time to get asked back.!!

Venison has a 'wild' flavor to it... I can't really describe how to describe "wild" but it is a definite taste.

When I am given Venison or Antelope to fix, I make it into a Chili because I can hide the wild taste with the hot Italian sausage

Venison tastes much better and is more tender. I would have asked "Gee this meat is really good. Is it beef or venison?"

You should have said "this is wonderful, what is it?" I mean if you know they hunt, simply ask if it is venison. Doesn't have to be in a way that lets them know you don't like it. I'm sure you have more tact than saying "this taste strange" LOL
