I recently read an article on MSN that mentioned Scientology (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22412036 Could someone please explain what Scientology is?

Im an ex-scientologist.
They believe in God but they arent much on relying on prayer, or giving yourself over to God for guidance, or believing in miracles. They believe in taking courses to help you straighten out your own life. The Sunday services are non-denominational and pretty bland. None of the fancy rites and symbolic stuff of other religions. They dont even bother to pass a plate around.
Other than that they have a bunch of self-help courses to help people straighten up. I took the Personal Communications and the Better Studying courses. Great stuff. They also have courses on shaking peer pressure, detoxing from drugs and alcohol, focusing your priorities, and even up to 1-on-1 counseling for deeper stuff (that last one can get pretty expensive depending on how messed up you are)
Looking at the courses Id say its perfect for the Hollywood crowd. I think it does pretty well. As far as I can see, the long list of ones doing it strike me as being happy open people. About the only thing anyone seems to hold against them is that they are happy, open and scientologists. Compare that to the rest of the hollywood crowd that is always in the news. Id much rather have the kinds of articles that Cruise, Travolta, Seinfield, Alley have than the ones about Gibson, Spears, Jackson.

NOOO! The Scientologists have gotten the Fresh Prince?! Where's DJ Jazzy Jeff? He would never have let that happen.
Scientology is a cult designed to make money off of people. As for their beliefs, they are available on Wikipedia and several websites. The "Scientology" episode of South Park sums up their beliefs fairly well, and in a highly entertaining fashion.

The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" meaning "study of." Scientology is about the individual man or woman. Its goal is to bring an individual to a sufficient understanding of himself and his life and free him to improve conditions in the way that he sees fit. Its a bunch of mambo jumbo..But I hope this can help.

It's a cult geared towards making money.
In Germany it isn't even classed as a religion, it's considered a business enterprise.
