Think about getting a foam mattress and putting it on a solid wooden frame ...

You don't say if you have already done some research, so you may get a lot of answers for things you have already checked out and discarded as possibilities. Can you update us with that info?

Also, you ask about a mattress, but a mattress and a box springs, or a platform base, is the system. Without a good base below the mattress, it will sag, even on a small guy.

I would say check out the Simmons BeautyRest. They come in three "grades," and each one has more features that give support, stabilization, and comfort. I have a mid-grade one with a plush top in a queen size. My husband is a big guy, and I'm not small, and we love the mattress/box springs. I spent about 3.5 hours trying out sets in the department store when we finally bought this one. It has titanium straps throughout the mattress that give it support, plus individually wrapped coils (which is what all the highend box springs have). Simmons is the only non-boutique mfg. that I found in my research that has these individually wrapped coils. It's a very stable, supportive structure system.

I've had three beds in my adult life, and this is far and away the best system I've ever had. Honestly, I go to bed earlier now that I have it, because it's soooo comfortable!

Get the firmest mattress set that you can find and put a sheet of 5/8 plywood between the mattress and the spring box.
Eventually it will sag but it will last for a long time.

I'd suggest one of the inflatable mattresses like the "sleep number" beds.

I bought the Simmons foam (like the tempurpedic) because my husband is heavy. It has been fantastic.
