I have a Bichon who likes to do this too. If you catch your dog eating garbage or something, discipline her, but if you didn't catch her in the act, don't because she won't know why she is being disciplined. If you are not going to be around to watch your dog put up a baby gate to rooms you don't want your dog to go in. Also we put up a stool in front of where our garbage is so she can't get at it.

Don't worry! I got my Bichon just last friday and i know exactly what you mean. He eats trash a lot too and he even got a stool infection. Well first things first. There is a reason he is doing it. He wants attention, when you say "no!" he finds it amusing, even if it's negative attention. To get rid of that, everytime he trys to eat trash just slightly use your foot to get him away from it. If he stays away, give him a treat so he knows what he did is good. This problem can't ever go away forever but you can decrease it. Just keep trying. Also at home, use a gate to keep him away from the trash (buy at Wal-Mart). He will slowly stop doing that, but don't be surprised if he does again all of a sudden! Hang in there. I hope this helps!

Believe it or not, my cat acts similarly to this dog. If I leave him alone too long, he dumps the garbage, climbs on the table and, in general, eats any exposed food in the kitchen. This is his way of saying, you left me too long.
All of the respondents have good ideas. My son suggested nailing the garbage can to a cabinet or floor so he can't tip it. And use bitter apple on the food on top. He may tip the garbage again, but he sure won't eat anything from there anymore!

i have 2 bichons and they are a mess and into everything, it totally cracks me up. We have a kennel in our laundry room, that we call the box. When one of them get into trouble we send them to the box for like a time out. They know exactly what the box is and what it is for. One day i walked into the kitchen and one of them was jumping on the edge of the trash can, as soon as she saw me she ran and got into the box. My dogs are so close that of one goes to the box, the other follows. They are people dogs, enjoy company etc and just get into things, thats just them. both are ours are a yr and half so they dont outgrow these things. We just mostly put up the trash can so they are not even tempted and we makes sure they have toys to play with and treats to eat and keep them busy. Once they even got into my purse and had everything out, had ate all the gum, but spit out the cinnamon certs, guess they were to hot..good luck, they are orgny but so very loveable breeds of dogs..

You should crate train her so that whenever she is alone, she will be confined and unable to reach any garbage.

You should also discipline her when you catch her in the act!
You're not alone...probably every doggy person has had one trouble dog in their lifetime...but we love them anyway!

Get a container with a lid that the dog can't get into. Not really hard.
