Time to put on the big-boy pants and act like a man. Register.
He will not be drafted.
If he does not register, he IS in violation of the law, and one decision of cowardice will affect him for the rest of his life.
He is not any better than millions of other 18 year old young men who registered.

There is very little chance of a draft just because it is politically unpopular. During the cold war the U.S government started making every male register for the draft at 18 to scare the soviets. That way they would believe if they did go to war with us we had the capabilities to draft every male ages 18 to 27 no problem. The cold war ended but this never changed. It is really just a mind game we play with other countries so they believe that although we have an all volunteer military mess with us and we can double or triple its size at a moments notice. If he doesn't register for the draft he will not be eligible for some jobs, and he will not be eligible for federal student aide. He also will not be able to vote. So he needs to register, and the chances of actually having a draft are slim to none.

- The U.S is not currently being invaded.
- We have enough brave people who already are enlisting as it is.
- If there is a draft, the people that have already served and are living regular lives will no doubt understand the call from his country he served for in the past.
- By the time they get to your boyfriend, chances are the war will be over.
Besides, it's THE LAW for all U.S citizens to register for possible draft. I've had to re-submit my name everytime I would enroll in a class at my local college through the phone service. He won't be the first or last to want to run away.
If he feels that way, I am sorry for the both of you. Because if he doesn't give a rats *** about what's going on with HIS country and HIS people, then what makes you think he will stand up for HIS girlfriend (you) or HIS family if you were to get assaulted or attacked by an enemy invading..or a common crook?

He will not be forced to join the military OR go to war at this time. There is no draft and the likelihood is very low that there will be one anytime soon. I registered when I turned 18. No probs.
Josie, that's BAD ADVICE. The boyfriend MUST register or he'll be in trouble with respect to future ability to receive unemployment, social security, etc.
By the way, I think "leaving the country to avoid a draft" could be a little chicken-hearted. Both you and your BF are now benefitting from a country that you live in; and that is as free as it is NOW because of others that fought in wars (like WW2). They didn't want to fight in a war then either (who does?) but they answered the call at the time and we're all better off because of their bravery, resolve and sense of duty.

There will not be a draft.
However that does not mean you should not leave the Country.
This is the oath that every immigrant takes when they become an American Citizen. If you aren't willing to live up to the requirements of Citizenship, then you should definitely leave and go join a society that you would be willing to support, defend, and contribute to.
I hereby declare, on oath,
that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen;
that I will support and defend the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;
that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law;
that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law;
that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and
that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

I had to register for the draft in 1980 when the Iran hostage crisis was going on. Nothing ever happened. The government has repeatedly said it does not want to have a draft, and the military generals don't either.
Don't worry. Even if he went to Iraq, the vast majority of people there make is back safely, and you could argue it is even safer than many US inner cities (in other words, going to Iraq may have actually kept a lot of US youth ALIVE!)

It's the law that al me age 18 and over register for the selective service. If you don't then he will be inelligble for many government programs including financial aid fro college.
As for a draft, if it happens it happens, that doesn't necessarily mean he will be accepted, he can be disqualifed for medical or other reasons.
However, if he flees to another country then he will be a criminal and will have to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder, wondering if that knock on the door is the police coming to arrest him. If he really loved you he wouldn't put you through that kind of stress.

There is no draft!! he has to register with Selective Service. No chance of the draft coming back either. But, if he wants to go in the military, let him be a man.

There won't be a draft. Military leaders don't want one. It ruined the Army during Vietnam. We will continue to be an all-volunteer force for a long time. But make sure he does register. He won't be available for government student loans unless he does.
