Not all fixtures are designed to accommodate a compact flourescent lamp. Also, it is important for the ballast (or base of the bulb as you call it) to breath.

If the ballast gets too warm, it will fail. (And it does not need to get anywhere near as hot as an incandescent bulb to fail.)

Not all lamps fit into every fitting! As the above poster said, check you have the right lamp for the base fitting you have and if not go and replace it for the correct one.

Do be careful. A different lamp base sometimes,
(but not always), indicates a specialized lamp
tha takes a different voltage.
Some old sunlamps, (M.V.) had transformer bases.

get a new one, cause u cant just fit it in there.
