I just read in January 2008 Decision Magazine (web site: decisionmag.org ), "We may know the religious songs. We may even say prayers. But if we haven't been to the foot of the cross, we haven't been born again.".
& All unrighteousness is sin (1Jn5:17) & yet before we can get to heaven, we must have righteousness. God says, "Be perfect as I am perfect, holy as I am holy." (Mt5:48&1Ptr1:16).

So, our self righteousness is like filthy rags. But when we are clothed in Christ righteousness (at the foot of the cross) we are made the righteousness of Christ. Even when Jesus said "It is finished!" on the cross (veil rent). The OT Saints &the thief on the cross raised up (as ghosts) & they ascended to the 3rd heaven. Because the atonement was made. (They didn't need 'baptism by proxy' because Jesus was baptized for them when He was baptized by John.) (Mt.27:50-54)

Mormons think that those not baptized into their Church need 'baptism by proxy' or 'baptism for the dead' to be saved.

Allabout, Baptism for the dead isn't a biblical Christian practice. It is a practice of those in or around the Church who didn't believe in the resurrection. You need to confess Jesus Christ your Lord honestly from your heart & believe in your heart he raised from the dead to be saved (receive eternal life).

jonathin, I am alread baptized yrs ago. I did it to obey Jesus. I already was saved before I was water baptized. But the water baptism was another act of faith that helped me understand salvation later in life. Baptized in Jesus Name, in the Name of the Father, Son & Holy Ghost. And my sins are atoned for. My past, present & future sins. That was sooo important, because I did plenty future sins. And if I didn't realize what Jesus did, atonement was made even for my future sins, I would never have recommitted to Christ.

Tom E, Did you get fully submerged at the foot of the cross?

Moose back, Jesus said that to see the Kingdom of Heaven, you must be born of water (you have been born of water (mothers waterbag)) and born of the Spirit. You need your spiritual eyes opened. You need to be born again, Gods way. Born of His Spirit & cleansed by His blood.

I am a true born again Christian...i believe Christ was born, died, and rose again for our sins and He now sits at the right hand of God. I am human and still sin, but I know all my sins, past, present, and future are covered by the blood. The Bible says to profess our faith by baptism...I was baptized by total immersion in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. but my baptism did not save me...it was only to acknowledge that i am saved and also an act of obedience. You are only born again if you have a total change of heart...a new life...a renewed mind...a completely refreshed and newborn spirit.

Mormons believe the Bible, which states that baptism by one with the proper authority is an essential step in the path to salvation (John 3:5). So important is baptism that even Jesus Christ, who was perfect, chose to be baptized to set an example for all of us. If baptism is essential for salvation, however, what happens to the many people who never even heard of Jesus Christ? What of all the people who never had the opportunity to be baptized by someone with authority? God would not be a just God if He barred these innocents from entering into the "kingdom of heaven."

While His body lay in the tomb, the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ visited the "spirits in prison," those who had not had the opportunity to accept Him in life (1 Peter 3:18-20, 1 Peter 4:6). Many of these spirits accepted Christ's gospel, but, as spirits, they had no way of being baptized "in the flesh." Despite their new-found sincere belief in Jesus Christ, they could not comply with His baptismal requirement.

Paul mentions briefly an ancient Christian practice that resolves this dilemma. In 1 Corinthians 15:29, he talks about baptism for the dead. In this sacred ordinance, a living person is baptized vicariously for one who has died, usually a relative. With the baptismal requirement fulfilled, the person who has died is free to choose to follow Christ or not. Regardless of his or her choice, baptism will not be a barrier to salvation; only personal choice will determine future spiritual progression.

Why did God set up such a seemingly complex system? The benefits of vicarious baptism for the dead go far beyond enabling the spiritual progression of the deceased. God instituted this system because He wanted the living to feel a connection with their ancestors, their heritage. He wanted the entire human family to be tied together as one. He wanted His children to understand, if only in a minuscule way, what it is like to work for the salvation of another soul. Baptism for the dead truly is a beautiful ordinance.

Krister Stendahl, the Dean of Divinity Emeritus at Harvard University who later became the Lutheran Bishop of Stockholm, confirms that baptism for the dead was a practice of the early Christian church. He said, "Now with the Mormons we have it again as a practice...I could think of myself as taking part in such an act…extending the blessings that have come to me in and through Jesus Christ. That's generous. That's beautiful. And should not be ridiculed or spoken badly of."

Born of water and spirit. Take YHVH's name, follow His rules, become part of His "bride". Accept scripture as your guide rather than some rules of a group.
