If you actually earn money from it, then yes, it's taxed as self-employment. You'll pay around 14% for self-employment tax for social security and medicare, plus whatever income tax you owe - percent for that will depend on your total income for the year including the survey income.

It also depends on how much you earned. If it was less than $400, you don't owe the self-employment taxes. If you made no other money (you're just doing it to make a few extra bucks while in school), you're well below the threshhold income $8700 for filing taxes (unless your parents claim you, then the number drops to $5350). If you've had federal tax withholdings, you should file a return to get whatever you overpaid back. Since you've net savy, try HRBlock Tax-Cut online or the www.irs.gov web site if your return is really simple.

You can also make income answering online surveys. I am making $1800/month by using this program: http://is.gd/myeasycash It's a little bit tedious work but a lot better than working at KFC.
