heard that no good breeder will do mixed breeds. Why's this? What is the result? (I have been doing my research, just like to hear from you all.)
Also, anyone know of Labradoodle shelters or rescues or other somewhat 'shedless' dogs as roomie has allergies. Thanks!

First of all Labradoodles do shed - labs are heavy shedders, and even poodles shed somewhat and some people do have allergies to them, so there is no reason to expect that you will get a non-shedding hypoallergenic dog. This is one of the lies perpetuated by these bad breeders.

Good breeders breed toward a specific established breed standard, choosing the best representatives of the specific breed to come up with pups that are genetically sound an d built exactly to do the job they were originally intended to do. People who breed designer dogs take two different dogs of different breeds and throw them together and get a mixed bag of puppies - they don't breed true -so you get dogs that poodle-like, lab-like, all shades of in-between. They shed, they are not healthier (in fact these breeders are less likely to show their animals to demonstrate they are examples of their breed and less likely to do genetic testing) -so you are actually more likely to get an unhealthy dog. the offspring won't breed true either - it takes many generations to develop a new breed and you should be breeding toward a specific purpose and toward a specific breed standard.

Then they charge a fortune for these mixed breed dogs that are no different than the thousands of similar dogs in the shelter. No serious breeder is taking labradoodles seriously and no legitimate registry is seriously considering them becoming an accepted breed anytime in the foreseeable future. They are just another designer dog.

The Labradoodle mix is not taken any more seriously then any other mix...There are already several established breeds out there with the traits taht these so called "breeders" claim to be working for..three such breeds are the Irish Water Spaniel, the Portugese Water Dog and the Pudel Pointer. The excuses that these breeders us are just that excuses used to try to justify their irresponsible breeding practices.

Also mixes are not healthier or more even tempered then a well bred purebred.
All dogs shed even the Poodle to some extent.

Most shelters have Poodle mixes. They are one of the most commonly seen mixes in shelters & rescues.

reputable breeders breed to preserve or improove a current breed. They do showing and health testing to proove that their dogs have something to give to future generations. Everytime they breed a litter, there is hopes that the pups will be a littl better than what the parents are.

Bredding mutts does not preserve or improove anything.. its just another mutt. There are plenty of mutts in the shelter.

Labradoodles are not "shedless" or "hypoallergenic" they are a mix of lab and poodle.. you never know what their coats will turn out to be like. Alot of them I have seen had a long curly coat that is still the same texture as the labs... along with all the oils that labs tend to produce.

You can try www.petfinder.com to find dogs for adoption. If you need something that your roomies allergies may tolerate look for a poodle or a bichon.

Keep in mind, no dog is 100% hypoallergenic either. Some breeds are more tolerable than others.

There are those who are seriously trying to develop new breeds from existing breeds. This has gone on for a long time, and is one of the ways new breeds are developed, the other being by selectively breeding from an existing breed. However, developing a new breed takes a long time and careful attention to the genetics, health and behavioral issues required to do good breeding. One of the problems with some of the "designer dogs" is that irresponsible or ignorant breeders are not paying attention to this, and third, fourth and subsequent generations of these dogs have major health and behavioral problems.

Also, a lot of these mixed breeds are the result of various breeds being thrown together without any clear notion of what's trying to be achieved, other than a catchy name and the desire to cash in on a fad.

Silvia S: I do not agree with the notion that mixed breeds are inherently healthier than purebreds. For every vet that says they are, I can find you one that will disagree. There are not any reliable data to answer that question one way or another.

Maybe they had a Golden that was an outstanding service dog,and a Lab that was as well,so they bred them to get a litter of pups with excellent temperaments. This is entirely different than breeding mixed breeds for pets. A purposeful breeding of two or more breeds to get better working dogs is entirely acceptable, and these dogs will not end up in a shelter. The same is done with sled dogs, herding dogs, hunting dogs, etc.

Because responsible breeders breed to improove the breed and see it continue. They breed for the experience and for hobbby, not for money. Cockapoos are not a breed. they are mix breeds. So there is nothing to improove and so called 'desighner dog breeders" randomly mix together different breeds soley for the purpose of appealing to gullable consumers. This can be dangerous for the mother dog in particular. If the male is even just an inch taller then her. The puppies could be too big for her to deliver.

Go to http://www.petfinder.com/ and type in poodle. There will be lots of poodle mixes waiting for good homes.

a group i work with www.heartlandlabrescue.com has three labradoodles rescued from a "breeder" in Missouri who was tired of doing it and auctioned off his "stock". these babies are in Oklahoma but the group will help coordinate transport to your location. labradoodles do shed, just much less, she might want to talk to a vet or "breeder" about labradoodle shedding before she decides it will work with her allergies.

The labradoodle is one of the few "designer dogs" that some breeders are taking seriously. Many breeders of this dog are trying hard to make it a recognized breed. So, not all labradoodle breeders are bad.

I own a mixed breed dog, a shih-tzu poodle mix (shi-poo) and she is a great combination of many good traits of both dogs.
