Tough call. J/K.

Atheists in general, at least the ones who actually are educated and practice tolerance. Many more atheists seem to be more open to possibilities, even in the militant belief that if something can't be proven empirically then it can not exist.

Fundamentalists are entitled to their beliefs, but are rather, erm... how to say this without being insulting or judgmental myself? Rigid. They are extremely rigid in their beliefs, and unwilling to allow for spiritual growth, which leads me to feel that they are closed to the truth and the way of God. They are exclusionary even though they claim to welcome converts. Many that I've come across are forceful, condemning, and judgmental, and don't seem to care if that's how they come across to others.

It matters what you mean by respect, though, I guess. There are more jokes and backhanded insults and insinuations hurled out by atheists, but at least you know which ones are actually educated and open-minded and are worth talking to. With the fundies, they may be insulting and closedminded, but you always know where you stand with them. In hell.

ETA: Catholics DO NOT WORSHIP Mary or Saints. Worship is reserved only for God. We speak to Mary, yes, and ask her to intercede on our behalf while we direct our prayers and worship to God and God alone.

I can tell you from personal experience that Catholics are viewed as very low on the totem pole by the fundamentalists religions. The whole Catholics worship Mary, Catholics have to many rituals...the list goes on and on. At least you have the common ground of believing in God and Jesus and even the Holy Spirit. I don't understand why it is at all. I think it's a really petty form of unhealthy competition.
Peace.

Good question. I think it's about even. Atheists tend to flat out disregard anything dealing with Christianity while the Fundamentalists simply have a mis-informed view of what the Catholic Church really teaches.

I don't know about ALL fundamentalists, but I've read the most horrible anti-catholic hatred from many of them. YouTube is CRAWLING with catholic haters. Atheists are more cynical overall but generally content to let people believe what they like.

As a Pagan, I can say that I respect Catholics and have spent time at retreats with Benedictine nuns. I find Catholics to be very accepting of all religions. It's surprised me here on YA to see that the fundie fear of Catholics and the assertion that they are not "Christian" is so prevalent in 2007.... I thought we got past all that BS when Kennedy was elected back in 1960. 47 years later and people are still deluded.

Atheists (including me) usually respect Catholics more, because you guys seem less oppresive and primitive in your thinking. Almost all creationist fundies you'll meet are Protestants.

Also, Catholics tend to be liberal, and so are atheists. The fundies despise the libs.

We get more respect from atheists and pagans than fundamentalists. I have never seen such anti-Catholicism from atheists or pagans than I have seen from fundamentalists. They really dislike Catholicism.

I'm what you would call a "fundamentalist", and I respect Catholics and Atheists, and anyone else who is sincere in their beliefs.
