John didn't have a reason. He told Jesus "You should be baptizing ME". Jesus said "we must do what is right". Jesus was showing an example to everyone. No matter who we are, we all must do what is right.
Again, John didn't have a reason, but God and Jesus did have a reason. John was trying to convince Jesus that he didn't need to be baptized but that HE needed to be baptized by him instead.

, I think, besides the reason of salvation, God sent him to dwell among man, as a man, to be an example of how man should live, serve and worship God. that it is the most important thing we do. As well , as loving others.
Also, since he was a man, he needed to seek God as man does, and therefore in He got baptized, fasted and prayed.
As far as John the baptist, goes. He was a preacher for
God and frequently baptized Gods people. he was Jesus' cousin, and God said before they both were born that John the baptist would declare that the savior God promised was at hand, then saw Jesus approaching the river declared that that Jesus to be the savior and Son of God, He baptisized Him at that moment that Jesus of was revealved in front of everyone.

Mark 1:9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. After reading the versus in question I noticed that Herod made a statement about what he was going to do with John. Not that he had already done it.

To set the example...
you are right that He didn't need it for cleansing... He was the sinless Son of God, the pure and spotless Passover Lamb of God...
He explains his reason in Matthew: Jesus answering John the Baptist, said unto him, "Allow it to be so now:.. to fulfill all righteousness." Matthew 3:15

John baptized Jesus to fulfill God's promise to him. God told John that he (John) would know who the promised Messiah was buy a dove descending upon Him. (John 1:33) Not only this, water holds deep spiritual significance in the Old Testament Scriptures and if you "read between the lines" in light of what water signifies you'll find many more answers to your question.

sin is in the "body" it pollutes the soul (stains, taints, etc.) this was a purification baptism for Christ..His soul was unharmed(without sin) (He was filled with the Spirit also) and, as a man, He was not above other men..in this respect, but as the Word of God, He showed His humility and faithfulness in servatitude...thus, fulfilling the scriptures...in every account of His life..and, from this point on, began his Ministry to the people..... "Peace!"

Jesus wants us to emulate Him and so even though He clearly didn't need the cleansing part, He did want to make it clear that He too was God's son not only literally, but in the way that we are adopted into God's family during baptism. In the same manner that God immediately certified "THIS IS MY SON" so too will we be called children of God once baptized. Because we are all children of God, Jesus is also our brother and a God who identified Himself in our lowly ranks in the Earthly struggle of good and evil.

Because John was prohecied to be the one to pave the way for Messiah. The baptism you're referring to, was a public display for the fulfillment of that prophecy.

When Jesus came to John to be baptized, John asked the same question. Why should he, a sinful man, baptize the Messiah? He tried to prevent Jesus from being baptized saying “I need to be baptized by You and You are coming to me?” (Matthew 3:14). The baptisms that John performed symbolized repentance, and he saw this as inappropriate for the One he knew to be the spotless Lamb of God. Jesus replied that it should be done because “it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). Christ was here identifying Himself with sinners. He will ultimately bear their sins; His perfect righteousness will be imputed to them (2 Corinthians 5:21). Therefore, this act of baptism was a necessary part of the righteousness He secured for sinners. His was a perfect righteousness in that He fulfilled all the requirements of the Law which we, for whose sin He would exchange His righteousness, are not capable of fulfilling. He is our perfect substitute.
This baptism was a very public one and was recorded for all generations to know about and understand, and it is important for several reasons. First, it pictures His death and resurrection. Second, it symbolizes the believer’s identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Third, it marks His first public identification with those whose sins He would bear. Fourth, the event was a public affirmation of His Messiahship by the testimony that came directly from heaven (Matthew 3:17).
Water baptism is used as a way to identify. In Jesus’ day, when a Gentile would convert to Judaism, he would have to be publicly baptized to identify him as a convert. Obviously, Jesus was not converting to anything. Jesus’ baptism was an identification of Jesus with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was baptized to publicly announce Himself as God’s Son, and to pronounce the beginning of His ministry with the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus did not “need” the Holy Spirit. However, to set an example for us, Jesus emptied Himself (Philippians 2:7) and relied upon the Holy Spirit’s power. Jesus' baptism and reliance upon the Holy Spirit is an example that we are to follow in our own lives.

Because Jesus set the example of what we are suppose to do. He showed us that it was an outward way to show that we were cleansed from sin on the inside.
