A wisdom tooth is most often a member of the last set of teeth to grow in. They form and emerge in the very last rows on both the top and bottom of your jaw. They are called wisdom teeth because they usually come in as you are in the final stages of adolescence, meaning you are almost an adult when they emerge. Often, there isn't enough room in your mouth to allow them to grow, which requires removal surgery.

I am 66 and have had two pulled when I was young ( I am not sure they even needed it) and still have two. So No they do not always have to be pulled.

They are just Big molars to chew with.

just extra molars, all the way at the back. People have them pulled because they often come in crooked/cause tons of pain because...for most people...there just ISN'T any room for them to come in properly.

big tooth found at the very back of the mouth and hurts like the antichrist until removed!! hope this helps!!
