We are thinking about getting a Burmese Mountain Dog, do we need a cage for one? They are large, but sweet and docile.

No. . .you don't need a cage. . .as long as you train your dog

PLEASE... it's called a crate, not a cage...
Cage sounds so horrid...

A lot depends on where you live and how you're using the dog.
Hopefully you've studied the dog's breed traits and know what the dog's job is. He's a working or herding dog and he needs a job to do.

Also, do you live in the city, a town, or the country?
Will he have a fenced yard or pasture land?

The crate would assist you in house training him if he's to be inside. I have pyrs, which are about the same and didn't use a crate, but there are benefits to using a crate, starting when the dog's a young pup.

Just understand you need to know how to be a GOOD Alpha Pack Leader. If you don't know how, google the term and read up on it.

Every dog should have a crate and be trained to go there on command. Think of it as an indoor dog house. If you ever want to leave the dog at a boarding kennel, ship him by common carrier or travel with him it is essential. A dog that big should be crated when in a vehicle with you. In an emergency stop he would be thrown around the car like a huge wrecking ball, you could both be injured and your control of the car would be severely compromised. It is for your dogs best interest and yours.

What would you need a cage for?

You may want to crate train him, as many people crate train their dogs while they are away from the house- especially as a puppy, it tends to help with house training.

If so, make sure to get a crate that is big enough for the dog to lay down, sit up, and turn around comfortably.

Personally I would suggest a cage. It gives them a little home and if you get a puppy they chew up everything while you sleep. The cage gives them a schedule. Meaning whatever schedule your on. It trains them not to have accidents in the house. So yeah I'd suggest it.

Yes, absolutely. All dogs need their own crate. They need to be crate trained. Crate training gets assists with house training, provides them with their own "den" to sleep in, and teaches them to be comfortable in a crate in the event of an emergency (like if you had to ever evacuate or go somewhere unfamiliar to him).

You mean a crate? If you plan to do crate training (which I recommend) yes.
