If you are going to use the pelt, then a smaller caliber bullet would be better than a large one. However, you want stopping power...a .22 won't do the trick (unless you are using a scope and can get clean head-shot) and a .308 will leave a nasty exit wound.

Something like a .223 Remington might be a good choice.

If you just want to get rid of coyotes and don't care what the pelt looks like when done...then use just about anything. I'd avoid shotguns...but any large rifle will do.

Bait depends...check your state regulations to see what's not allowed. By buddy uses a recording of other coyotes. But that's legal for him because he has a farm. He also uses lures like urine...both coyote and small dog urine.

He doesn't use food only because he has some bears near his farm and he doesn't want to habitualize the bears. Plus...meat, which is a good Coyote bait, also attracts rats, crows, vultures, etc. So he just sticks to the recorded calls.

A good coyote? As far as the pelt...winter is the best time to kill one. Same with fox. But like all canines they are prone to mange, fleas, ticks, ear mites, etc...it's hard to tell from a distance.

I have used some large calibers for coyotes, usually some of my military surplus rifles. I have used my Garand, 8mm Mausers, .30-06 and my favorite, the Swede 6.5x55 in a Model 96. I don't take the hides and prefer not to even touch those nasty things. These rifles are overkill, I know, but I'm usually on ranches at the permission of ranchers to control the population, in the middle of nowhere.

I'm in the southwest desert and while you think it's wide open, it's actually got quite a bit of sagebrush and the coyotes can show up from anywhere if your have a good call. I like to set up on the side of a hill or mesa so I get a good overview of the area and the call sounds are amplified by the hill. This has some drawbacks, as I have had them show up behind and on top of me. I have a portable blind that keeps me hidden and keeps the sun off too.

A bunch of guys out here use combo guns.....rifle over shotgun. The rifle of choice is the Savage 24. A good friend has a .222 Remington over a 20 gauge. He says it's the perfect coyote gun, as you have range and a good shotgun for ones that show up close in.

Coyote are very fast and wary.....they come running in fast but can pick up a scent or sound quickly and disappear as fast as they show up. There is not time for sitting around relaxing, you need to be scanning the area and be ready to shoot in a couple of seconds.

I plan on getting a .243 soon for this, it's got a lot of range.

Coyotes aren't even close to being extinct, and it's not mean to hunt them. The best terrain to hunt on is something where you can see far off. Best calibers are probably .22 on up. I don't know what you mean by "what characteristics make a good coyote". Equiptment to use would be a gun and a call. If you want to use a decoy, go ahead.

Dam anti-hunters.

Best terrain i would say open field, you can get further shots there. If you can use an electronic call, great that's what you should get, Cabela's sell them. Not sure if baiting is legal where you are. As for a god coyote, as long as there fur is good looking and not mangy, then you have a nice coyote. As for best calibers try a .223 or a 25-06 they shoot flatter further out.
Hunting coyotes can be fun, not illegal @ all

I don't coyote hunt but the answers on here are just stupid. Coyotes are not near extinction and its not mean, its nature.
My dad use to have a garage built out in his backfield and at night he sat up on the roof and used a rabbit distress call. He shot two that night. He was killing them because they were scaring the neighbor's horses and their pack had over fifteen members. It's not natural to see coyotes in packs like that, they're usually solitary or with a mate. They need to be hunted in some places.
