I just got a mailing list of my high school graduating class and was shocked to see that a couple of my classmates have died. is there a source online I can look them up? Simple yahoo searches are not working.

Depending on how long ago they died, check theSocial Security Death Index. Its updated every six months or so. You should be able to find it at www.familysearch.org

Obituary.com (or similar title) may be of help. Name and place/year of death helpful.
