The only thing I know of them, is what I have seen first hand. Every once in a while, they come over and use some of our equipment, and train some of their younger guys on it. They are extremely respectful, and always bring some form of a gift for us letting them use our equipment. But, they always seem to walk down the middle of the road at night when we are driving, kind of irks you sometimes. Maybe it's a difference in cultures. I know they love the BX though!!

We trained with the JMSDF quite often when I was stationed over in Japan. They have alot of the same technology our ships have, just not quite as new as ours. However, their technicians were just as skilled as we were, so they could get the job done if the need ever arises... It doesnt hurt that there is always a US ship or two in the area, though...

As a US Naval Aircrewman, I flew on exercises with the JSDF many times and found them to be VERY competent, professional, and skilled in the ASW and ASuW fields.

I was based for 6 months out of NAS Atsugi Japan, and enjoyed my time On and Off duty with my collegues in their P-3C and SH-60J communities.

I've worked closely with the JMSDF (Navy), and they are a group of consummate professionals. They ask smart questions, listen to the answers, and apply htem to the task at hand. I explain something once, they get it, and we move on.

I have observed them operating in Iraq. They were extremely;y competent and their staff work was incredible.

Their troops were well trained - just stifled by an overly-restrictive ROE.

Japan really doesnt need an armed forces since it is defended by the US.

Any attack on Japan would be answered by the US.
