Killing in the name of an old superstition goes back a long time, far earlier than the middle ages. As long as people believed in different gods, they fought over who was right. Ironically, neither were. There are no gods.

Well the Koran says that it is ok to kill the enemies of Islam IF they come against us and attack us first, but forcing other people into Islam is forbiden by Koran, whoever did so was misguided.
