Please ignore He Who Must Have the Remote for he talks rubbish. This is the problem when people from the USA answer questions on the UK&I site.

If you buy a new television it will have to have an HDMI input to be able to display the "HD Ready" logo.

This is because there are no HD programmes on Freeview at the moment so the only sources of HD signals will be from Blu-Ray or HD-DVD or Sky/Virgin HD. They are connected to the tv by using HDMI cables.

Some of these sources are serviced by boxes which use "component video" as a connection system (particulary older ones), but not all televisions will accept Component Video.

The HDMI standard also contains device control and copyright protection signals.

Having said all that, make sure that your new television has a built in Freeview (digital) tuner so that it'll still work after the end of the analogue service. Sadly, not all new sets have built in Freeview tuners even now.

No they are not the same thing.

But most of the modern HDTV's have several HDMI inputs which handle all types of video signals and audio.

Slightly older HDTV's have DVI inputs.

Older HDTV's than that have component inputs that accept HD signals.

"HD Ready" televisions do not have a tuner. You cannot simply hook up an antenna to these sets. You have to buy an out-board tuner which run about $120 if you want to use an antenna.
