The way to good health is all about balance and moderation. The largest component of your diet should be fruits and vegetables (at least five portions a day) followed by starchy and wholegrain foods and then smaller amounts of protein. Fatty and sugary things should make the smallest contribution. The occasional burger or packet of crisps is fine so long as you continue to eat a wide range of foods:

PROTEIN
* Meat
* Fish
* Dairy products - e.g. milk, yoghurt, cheese
* Eggs
* Pulses - e.g. beans, chickpeas, lentils
* Tofu
* Quorn
* Nuts & seeds
* Wholegrains - e.g. wholemeal bread, porridge oats, brown rice

CALCIUM
* Dairy products
* Tofu
* Broccoli
* Green leafy vegetables - e.g. watercress, kale
* Almonds
* Brazil nuts
* Figs

IRON
* Meat - e.g. lean red meat, turkey, chicken
* Fish
* Tofu
* Pulses
* Green leafy vegetables
* Wholegrains
* Dried fruit - e.g. figs, dates, apricots
* Nuts & seeds
* Fortified breakfast cereals

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
* Oily fish - e.g. mackerel, sardines, pilchards
* Nuts & seeds
* Plant oils - e.g. olive, hemp, flaxseed
* Avocados
* Tofu
* Houmous
* Tahini (sesame seed paste)

Also always make sure that you have 3 main meals everyday and drink plenty of water.

I'm having the same problem, I'm a junk food junkie and i am not proud of it. My New Years resolution is to eat healthier. I am not over weight, but i will be if i dont start eating right. I've tried to become a vegetarian but its hard when chicken is one of my favorite foods.
So my suggestion is to try to eat the 3 squares a day, with the foods from each food group. And exercise. Be it walking, biking, or going to the gym.

Eat adequtely and frequently. Means, eat less but every so often because when you consume food, it gets burned off. So, more you eat at once, the more likely that you'll store fat. Eat less then no fat can be stored. Also, consider what you are eating. Fruits and vegtables will fill you in quickly and keep you going for a long time. Consuming one banana and a small glass of milk at 9am will keep you going until 11:00-11:30am. Then you need to eat something around that time. This way, you will not store any fat in your body and you will be healthy. You need to eat healthy (good food) to be healthy. Also, excercise would help to size your body and make you look fit.

Eat 5 portions of fruit & veg a day - try to have a variety of different coloured stuff. On your dinner plate have 1/4 protein 1/4 carbs & 1/2 veg or salad. Eat lean meat, poultry & fish.
Be good 80% of the time and have treats for the 20% !
Drink plenty of water.

I try not to listen to all the fads about super diets and super foods etc.

There is always going to be something new that is either bad or good for you.

Common sense for me. Eat a bit of everything, eat the right portions and at regular times i.e. don't starve yourself allday then gorge in the evening otherwise it affects your digestive system, cook food from fresh ingredients instead of having ready meals..well at least limit them and drink lots of fluids such as juice and not fizzy drinks. I'm one that can't drink water on its own.

Topics:

- Portion control (life longevity)
- Food Combining (digestive health)

Unfortunatley, Pavlov was known for his conditioned response, and his most important work on digestion has been ignored by mainstream academia. However, there is a lot published on 'food combining.'

For health, you must also consider adequate: shelter, sleep, and exercise.
