The fact that one faction fears the country slipping towards a restrictive theocracy, whilst the other fear the abandonment of their religious values.
( And both screaming loudly about their constitutional rights )
Or does the USA just create very peculiar "brands" of Christians and Atheists. Making many in other countries shake
their head and sigh in desperation "Only in America ".

I live in Oregon, which is referred to politically as being on the "Left Coast." Oregon is far more secular than the part of the U.S. referred to as the "Bible Belt". I don't really see the polarization between the believers and non-believers. I would rather keep faith a private matter and not see it become a political issue, but I know that won't happen. Religious issues can galvanize voters like no other can. As long as this is the case the debate and acrimony will continue.

Frankly, I think it's just indicative of the coarse egomania that has infused much of society here -- so many people think they are "right" and get bent out of shape whenever someone dares to think differently.
And it's amazing and a little sad that Christians tell non-believers that they're going to hell, while athiests do their best to try to persuade Christians not to believe. Why aren't people just satisfied with whatever they believe -- why the obnoxious need to deride others?

Relax. Screaming and yelling is normal. This is how we work things out. Been successful a tolerance ever since the Dutch landed in New Netherlands.
It's better that having cars and buses burned every night and chalking it up to "youths," then making it illegal to film the crimes or mention that a jihad is going on downtown.
Besides, R&S is tame compared to Politics and Government. In fact, R&S is where I go to relax!

As an agnostic, I will let you in on a little secret. You cannot prove that any "god(s)" Do OR Do Not exist. So you are both arguing over what is impossible to know, i.e. "my security blanket is better than your security blanket". BTW, I do like your attitude. I do attend a christian church because they are a loving and caring community that accepts that I do not do dogma. You would fit in well. Blessings on your Journey!

Free at last! Just checked in to see if you people are still turtle snapping.
Pippi Von Trapp-- I've NEVER seen an Atheist try to persuade a Christian not to believe. NEVER.

Both the Christians and Atheist in the USA take great comfort in knowing that we hold the largest nuclear stockpile of weapons to get our views across to the remainder of the planet

nope. US is more solid in reilgious make up than most other countries. The US is roughly 90 percent christian and 10 percent other with the other being mostly atheist. Other places is like 50 percent christian in europe.

The latter.
Hopefully we can follow in the footsteps of most of Europe and have religion be a non-issue soon.
