I mean how can you tell that someone is good or not

You can't "know" if a person is good or not by texting or chatting, but you can have faith and trust that they are being truthful. However, sometimes it takes years of living with a person to find out a person is not good. Just ask anybody who has been divorced.

You can't. The first stage of getting to know someone, or even dating for that matter, is all about "acting." It's true. We all do it. We put our best efforts forward to "sell" ourselves in essence. We want others to think highly of us and to like us, thus we do what we think is the best thing to achieve that. Familiarity breeds contempt, thus the longer we go in a relationship, the more apt we are to start losing these "qualities" (sales tactics) that we first displayed. So no, you can't tel squat from a text, email, IM or even in person for a couple of months. Good luck!

You can't tell. They could be the creepiest weirdest person on earth and you could never tell. Sometimes even when you meet someone in real life you still can't tell what type of person they are.
Do you really think that people thought they were in danger when they met Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy? Those were two really great guys, and they were both good looking. But they were also both serial killers that loved to torture, rape and kill.

Gut instinct, experience, and watching how they react under pressure... but you can really tell a lot more over the phone than through chat, you know. Tone of voice is very important.

To be honest really don't know but you just give them a chance to be honest with you but keep at the back of your mind exactly what they said and how it was written so when you see something does not add up then you know if that person was good or bad.

You don't. There is no way to know if you are talking to the most decent person in the world or the biggest creap. A woman can also pose as a man and vice versa.

you can't.... you have to meet the person face to face to really get to know them... not that online romances can't work, because I've seen a few that have.... it's just that you can't base the whole relationship on texting or chatting.

You can't. You can't know. There is no way to know. No one could know :)
You will have to meet them IN A PUBLIC PLACE and get to know them the old fashioned way. Good luck to you.
Oh, if you are under 18 you shouldn't meet them at all of course without an adult to supervise. They might be crazy.
