if you have the money get an oil based paint best for weather. As a kid used it in NJ harsh winters and blistering summers. Did a great job on the house. Latex needed to be repainted every two -three years. Oil lasted 5-7 years.

I think anything painted that will stay in the sun will eventually fade, but if the item is also going to be in any kind of weather (rain, snow, etc), you might want to think about using Rustoleum paint (spray). If the object is metal, then I would definitely use it because it helps prevent rust and it won't fade as quickly.

I painted a door for a downtown area business twelve years ago. It is subjected to full sunlight at least six hours a day. It was painted with oils and coated with a UV resistant clear coat. It looks as good as it did the day I finished. Maybe I just got lucky, but it is holding up beautifully.

An oil-based enamel is your bet bet. Latex will fade if exposed to sunlight on a regular basis.

depends what it is, if it's like a bench or something, you can paint it normal and then gloss it, others inside, get thick hard wearing paint but apart from that, there's not really much you can do about it!
