My shih-tzu just had eye surgery and needs to wear a surgical "cone" to keep her from scratching her eyes. However, it slips off her head and can cause just as much damage as her claws. In order to keep it on her neck...you would have to practically choke her, which I think the dumb vet assistant did. She was completely stressed out to the point where her tongue is turning blue. I've removed it and I'm keeping her in my arms 24/7. She's amazing and can stay that way forever, but as much as I love her...I can't!!!! Any body have any other solutions to keep her eye protected????? She needs to wear this for 4 weeks.

Can't attach it to collar because she can't use a collar either...She uses a harness. And, attaching it to the harness would restrict her from walking...That would really stress her out.

Gernot S:
How did I know someone would come along with a "know-it-all" answer!!!! THE DOG IS A ****-TZU AND IT'S HEAD IS SMALLER THAN IT'S NECK. Even the vet who deals 75% of his business with Shih-tzus because he's an eye specialist, acknowleges that and stated " Many Shih-tzus that are not show quality have this problem...MANY!!!!!" It's a character flaw that disqualifies them from being show dogs...but not from being Shih-tzus. .Look around at how many of them wear harnesses instead of collars. And check out my first answer...she has the same problem!

BIG SKI:
Good idea. I did see a harness the other day in Petsmart that wraps around the front that I will use... Her present harness doesn't do that but I will buy the one at Petsmart and try that. Thanks!

Can you attach the cone to her collar? That's what I did for my greyhound. If not, does she have boots you can put on her feet to prevent her scratching? That's all I can think of - if that doesn't work, can you call and ask the vet's office for suggestions?

Sounds like you're going to have to modify the collar. Use strips of cloth from an old t-shirt or jeans, and make a couple of loops that you can put around her front legs.Make these pieces long enough to pass under her front legs snogly, but not too tight or she will chafe. Make 2 holes in the collar near the point where it rests on the neck, close to the dogs shoulders. Then take a 3rd strip, and join the 2 shoulder straps across her back. Use a bow tie knot so that you can remove this strap easily.
You should end up with something that looks like backpack straps an the narrow end of the funnel, with a strip joining the 2 straps. If you have an old pair of toddler overalls, use the straps from those, then it would be adjustable in length. Good luck!

The only thing I can suggest is getting her a harness then attaching the cone to that by either running the part of the harness that goes around the neck to the cone tabs or attaching the cone tabs with string or bandage rolls.

You can tie the cone to the dog's collar. If it still comes off, get a harness that goes over the shoulders too. You love your dog, but you have to remember that the cone is for both you and your dog's health.

you could fasten a type of harness with nylon (pantyhose material) to hold it on. When you put it around her neck, also wrap it behind her elbows and around her torso. It'll look like some sort of strange contraption, but thats how i've seen vets get cones on Ferretts, who also have necks wider than their heads.

No shih tzu's neck is bigger than its head. You are letting sentimentality undo the good work the vet is trying to do. Put the cone back on immediately.

I think you could try punching 2 holes on each side and string shoestrings through the holes and under her arms and tie them just tight enough to keep the cone on her head.

he won't slip out of a martingale type collar, like what greyhounds wear.
Keep him on a leash or long line, and tethered to you. Everytime he thinks about messing with it, give a correction.
