I just bought a S&W 500 and am looking for a good holster for it. These two holsters are virtually identical except that one is an "across-the-chest" holster and the other is a vertical shoulder holster.

Does anyone have any experience with the pros and cons of each of these types of holsters?

With the new 'King of the Hill" S&W .500 'hand cannon', the 'cross-chest' front carry holster will probably be the better choice, especially for field carry under heavier outer clothing. This is particularly true for those pistoleros of any stockier than usual build, such as myself, as the 'side-mount' shoulder rigs make for a heckuva 'reach-around' when encumbered by thicker field weight jackets & other foul weather gear.
I used to carry one of my S&W M-29's for back-up in the field, and a 'cross-chest' was far-and-away the wiser choice for tramping thru the woods.

The choice is strictly up to you, but I think the chest holster will be somewhat more comfortable.

Just bear in mind that with that big heavy sixgun, no shoulder holster is likely to be as comfortable as a good belt holster on a good sturdy 2 1/2" or 3" gunbelt. At least that is my experience over the last 30 years of packing a pistol.

If you are going to wear a back pack while hiking/hunting, you want the cross chest holster so you can access the firearm quickly in case of need. The shoulder holster will get hung up in the pack strap and is a cinstant irritation. The shoulder carry is easier on your back, the cross chest holster takes getting used to. It tends to cause my lower back to ache, but thn, I don't use it as much as I did back when I was hunting with just a handgun.

The main thing I have against over the chest holsters is that if you fall, you will bruise your chest badly and possibly damage your gun. I would go with the vertical carry model.

with a gun that big the chest holster will be much more to your liking
