I have a 3/12 year old chihuahua, should I get a playmate for her? She lays around and needs exercise. Does not get to be around other dogs very much. I live in Minneapolis MN. Would like to use a breeder for a pet.

Hello. Your Chi is your responsibility as you may already be aware. Therefore, it's up to you to see that she is walked every day for at least 30 minutes. This is rule #1. Toss a ball around for her; give her little things to do, like hide one of her favoriate treats to find. That will get her off her butt.
She is already set in her ways, and in human years she is about 22 years old. Bringing a pup in may not be what she wants. If this is the only way to help her, then be sure that whoever you get your pup from is willing to take it back in case your Chi does not accept it.
Your Chi just needs more activities, and walks and she'll be fine.

If she needs exercise then take her for a walk everyday! What is another dog going to do, they will do the same thing as her lay around and relax, you will have two dogs needing exercise.
It don't matter how many dogs you have you either need to walk them or take them outside in a fenced in yard and have them run around and play with a toy or something. Them sitting around the house inside all day isn't good. They need at least 30 minutes- 1 hour of exercise per a day.
Whether playing with a toy outside in the yard or going for a walk.

If you want to get another dog then alright fine but, if you want another dog so that your dog gets into shape and gets exercise that is the wrong reason. Another dog will not make your dog you have right now get into shape. They both will be sitting around and sleeping all day.

I agree with the two above answers, but if you feel you can handle another dog then I think she deserves a chance for a playmate. Maybe you could try adopting from a shelter, but have a few days where the two dogs are brought together before deciding to take it. Adoption gives you the option of taking the animal back to the shelter. The ASPCA is the best place to adopt from because they are a no-kill facility.

Getting another dog, well, at first they will play & get a little exercise, but then when they both settle in you'll have two dogs that need exercise. Because dogs aren't in the wild any more, they are domesticated now & aren't out there trotting through the woods & hunting for food. Their mind, if not stimuated, can become inactive and then you have a dog that lays around. Yes, your dog needs exercise, like 30 minute of walking or ball fetching each day, but her brain needs to be stimulated or else she will continue to just lay around. Bringing a new dog in stimulates for a while, but then like I say, when they both settle in, then you'll have two dogs that have needs.
When you say you want to use a breeder as a pet, I'm hoping you mean you want to adopt what somebody else has used as a brood ***** at a puppy mill or in their home that has been breed , and you want to rescue it (you know, get it fixed & vet care) to keep as your pet. That would be a true blessing for the one you rescue and as a contribution to the dog community. I'm hoping that's what you mean.
But you are still going to have to do the exercising yourself, whether you have one or two dogs. That's what dogs need from you. It's kinda like your responsibility to them to keep them healthy & happy for many many years, not just at the moment. I'm sure your dog is happy & healthy (& fixed - that's important), it's just that her happiness is not doing much at the time and if she continues to lay around then her health won't be too good later on in her life. I'm curious to hear how you come up with things to get your dog up & at 'em.

Why not exercise her? You know with two chihuahuas, you should still be exercising them! It is part of your duty as a responsible dog owner. Having a small dog is not an excuse for no exercise.

If she does not get to be around other dogs much, you could take her to socialization classes. My vet clinic offers them for $15. You pay the fee for each individual class you actually go to, and it is just a small group of dogs (divided by size) that get together and the behaviorist works with the dogs to make sure everyone is getting along!

If you decide to get it a play mate go with another chihuahua they tend to get a long better with their own breed and a bigger pup could hurt it in puppy play

I think all dogs should have a playmate. Your idea is a great way for you to kill two birds with one stone, do it.
