I'm currently a 4th year medical student in Poland and I have a 1-year polish non-schengen visa ending on January 3rd 2008. I will complete my studies and get my degree on March 15th 2008. But I must leave the country on January 3rd. And since the Schengen has expanded I can't just go to Germany and get the free '90 day tourism' stamp. What are my options? Can I go to the UK and come right back? Do I need to go to the US and wait 180 days? I have not traveled to Germany in over 8 months so i'm not sure the 180 day rule applies to me. Maybe I should just keep a low profile for 2 more and take my chances. Also, i am an american citizen. I appreciate any insight.

SCHENGEN ZONE
Poland Joins the Schengen Area
On 21 December 2007 passport checks were abolished on Poland’s border to Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania by a decision of the European Parliament – all this on account of an extension of the Schengen area to admit nine new states, including Poland.
The Schengen area is a zone which comprises the territories of individual EU Member States where specific rules of the Schengen Agreement apply with regard to border security, citizens’ personal data protection, reciprocal cooperation between the signatories’ law enforcement services, issue of visas to foreign nationals, as well as participation in the so-called Schengen Information System (a common electronic database of persons and property) etc. Close cooperation of the services responsible for citizens’ security in a broad sense leads to improvement of the general public security level, including crime combating and prevention.

Status of membership and implementation
As of 21 December 2007, 24 states and Monaco had abolished border controls on persons among themselves, an increase from 15 on 20 December 2007. The nine new countries which entered the Schengen travel area are: The Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.Cyprus, which entered the European Union at the same time as the above states, will delay joining the Schengen zone by one year. Two latest EU entrants, namely Romania and Bulgaria, are enhancing respective security systems to qualify for joining the Schengen territory. The existing 15 countries have been: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. Of these, two countries, Norway and Iceland, are not EU members.

now, after all of this, do come back and explain your case better, if you are a student, they will certainly not trow you out right at graduation,or near it, i have never heard of such thing?

You have to be out of the Schengen zone at the fifth. You are reducing it particularly near. What if a flight is not on time or grounded? You are taking a particularly colossal chance, mostly too colossal a chance. When making plans a travel, it's shrewd to ebook your flight a few days - no less than - earlier than your visa expires, simply in case flights are not on time, climate issues, and so forth. Such matters occur most commonly adequate that someone will have to plan forward!
