Please make a case why it would be a good idea to teach Ebonics in schools. If you can't make a fairly reasonable case for it just say "It's Ludicrous".

Charlie: The non-existant language that you quoted was never suggested to be taught in schools. While on the other hand Ebonics was actually proposed for a curriculum in the California schools system. Teachers were to speak Ebonics so that the "students" would undersand. Yu knowz wus I'm saying yo?

If you mean that the masses should be taught a sub-language,which exists because of LACK of proper English teachings,,the answer is definitely not!! It would be like teaching the WRONG way to perform a task to show you how NOT to do something.. If you want to make money at it, like 'rap' or 'bee-bop' that's one thing, but to TEACH in schools, would that not be degrading to a class of people?? Can you say truthfully, that Ebonics is proper.. The mutilation of the English language strictly because of LACK of proper training in language is worthy of research.. Its obviously the taking of the sounds of English and mulling and conjoining of poor English into something that doesn't even translate unless you forget all you ever knew about English.. I' m not trying to be critical , but you don't reward someone for being poorly educated.. SOLOMON

Ebonics (or AAVE, if you'd rather) is a real dialect with grammatical rules and structures. So not only would it be silly to instruct a teacher to use a dialect with which he/she is completely unfamiliar ... doing so would probably result in him/her being pretty politically incorrect by speaking the way he/she "thinks" African-Americans speak.

That being said, I don't think there's a need to teach or use Ebonics in place of standard English. Teachers and students should aim to be mutually intelligible using standard English. There are many places where students speak only a local dialect, which is sometimes one that is looked down upon ... Italy comes to mind. But they have to use and eventually master the standard dialect at school.

They teach Ebonics in some of the schools in DC, I live by DC. DC is a very violent crime infested area, so I think that teaching Ebonics there is a good idea. It gives the kids that have to grow up in the gang infested rat hole an idea of what the guy with the gun is saying to them.

The subject is extremely important if you are studying linguistics in college. However, I could see it being taught in high school.

It would serve the same purpose as learning any language. You begin to understand that language is a model and not the thing being modeled... that language has connotations and denotations. I think Ebonics would be a fun subject and could help us learn to communicate better with others whether they be black, white, hispanic, or other cultural groups.

The schools are teaching enough rubbish now as it is.

Why not learn a useful language instead : Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese.....all a bit too hard is it ?

Did you ever see the movie 'Airplane!'? That's my argument for Ebonics.

There is NO good reason for teaching a sub standard language in school. If someone wants to learn it on their own... fine.. but it has no place being taught in school
