I don't think any dog should be labeled a 'dangerous dog' based on breed alone.
Dogs should be labeled dangerous dogs if they have a legitimate bite history..
The best way to prevent dog attacks is to improve and enforce leash laws...

I also don't agree that any dog should be banned based on breed.. For what, the 10-15 people that get killed every year because of someone letting their dog roam?
Why not ban cars? They kill many many more people...

No I don't think they should, would you classify yourself as dangerous just because other humans are killers? I can see that once again though everyone will automatically blame not just that one dog but the breed itself!
In the latest incident we have a 16 year old girl left in charge of 3 children aged 7,6 & 1 and a large dog. Sorry but to me that is an accident waiting to happen. From the report the dog was kept in the yard (hardly a good way of socialising an animal to be around children) which she would see as her territory and the 16 year old was upstairs. We only have a 7 yr olds statement to go on as to what happened when she opened the door, but a 7 year old would have been struggling to hold a 1 yr old and some action on the part of either could have provoked the dog! In this case the very size of the dog and no adult around led to tragedy!
Sensible dog owners don't allow children to be unsupervised with a known dog much less a dog they've only had a few months.
If it was a 'rescue' they may have known little of it's past, so even more reason to not leave it and the children alone together.
Brought up from puppy-hood with love and discipline Rotties are super dogs and if brought up with children normally a very gentle and protective animal but even then I wouldn't leave them unsupervised.

My heart goes out to the children, it must have been so traumatic for them all and none of them are to blame though I'm sure the poor 16 yr old will blame herself!!!
but at the end of the day I still see 'Human Fault' Where were the owners of the dog or the Parents of the child?

I would willingly take a test to prove I'm capable of handling the breed I own (in fact the house and Vet checks and interview I've had to get my present dog were quite a thorough one) Perhaps it is time that anyone wanting to keep a dog should have to have a license and pass a test BEFORE they get the Dog!

I have two of them. They are no more dangerous than any other dog, if that. They are the most obedient, loyal, soppy breed I have ever owned. It's owners that are dangerous. People should have to take a test and undergo training before they keep dogs, it would stop all cruelty and put a lot of the idiots off.

As a point of interest, the dogs I have trouble with when I'm walking mine are Jack Russells - they're nasty!

To suziejoytotheworld: Rottweilers do not descend from wolves at all. That's like saying all humans descended from apes! They were first recognised as a good herding breed during Roman times, and were used to herd cattle across country to keep the Roman army in food. They were chosen for their determination and their loyalty, NOT for their aggression.

To ladyfrom below: Just where do you get your info from? I have kept all different types of dog, and know what I'm talking about, YOU DO NOT. There are many attacks made on people from retrievers and labradors, as well as ALL small breed dogs. If large dogs behaved like the Jack Russells of this world, they would be put down. Get your facts right, and change your avatar while you're at it - it's ugly!

No. Rottweilers are powerful dogs, and not the dog for everyone. Just because the have the potential to be dangerous doesn't mean they all are. Any dog can be aggressive. It's all in how the dog is raised and bred. The rottweilers I've met are all gentle giants and definitely do not deserve to be classed as dangerous.

How would you feel if your favorite breed was classed as dangerous? Not everyone should own Rottweilers, and they require a firm handler. With the right person, they can be wonderful dogs.

For your information Haza Rottweilers ARE NOT classed as a dangerous dog......If any dog is mistreated by their owners then the chances are they are going to bite someone. The people who mistreat animals should be put down.
I have read the story of the little boy who was killed by the Rottweiler and I do feel for his family but why was a 7 year old taking a 1 years old outside unsupervised I own a Rottweiler myself and I trust her 100% but my daughter is not left with her unsupervised.
Any dog can bite my husband as got a scar on his face were he was bite by a corgi as a child.

No, no dog should be classed as a dangerous dog on breed alone. The problem with dangerous dogs arises when people get the more powerful breeds (Rotties, ABPT, Dobies, GSD ect) and either intentionally make them mean or are unable to handle them or unwilling to spend the time to properly train or socialize them. Any dog can be a dangerous under those circumstances but these breeds tend to be capable of doing much more damage that say a vicious Poodle that you just tend to hear about them more. Making any breed a dangerous dog or banning it really only punishes the responsible owners who's dogs aren't the problem. The peoples who's dogs are the problem will either ignore the laws or move on to another breed and make that breed become the next "dangerous dog"

..its the owners who dont know how to handle dogs that should be classed as dangerous....thanks to stupid owners and the media, all the hard work I put into my dogs seems wasted as I have to put up with hysterical people screaming when they see me walking my dogs, the abuse I get, filthy looks, ignorant and offensive comments etc.. My male Rottweiler has been attacked by a JRT and a few "safe" Labs and no one batted an eyelid. This was while he was on a lead and completely under my control. My dogs have undergone months and months of training since old enough to leave their mothers and the training is still an ongoing process. But because of all this in the media, people over react and tar every Rottweiler with the same brush. I know the breeders of my dogs and they would not have sold me one of their pups if they had the slightest suspicion that I would not be a responsible, trustworthy owner. In my opinion, it would be better to reintroduce dog liscences and compulsory basic training of ALL BREEDS. It is ALWAYS human error that causes these tragedies. I know my dogs and trust them but I never leave them alone with an ADULT that I dont think capable of handling them correctly and most certainly not a child. I take no risks with my dogs and approach every human and animal as a possible threat to them and act responsibly. Backyard Breeders and irresponsible owners are the actual route cause of all this.

A lot of the dogs that are on the dangerous dog list are those with a strong prey drive. Also included are dogs with a stronger history of biting and those that dog fighters like to use for dog fights.

The trouble is that the real guilty party can't be classified as a dangerous dog, but it's the owner who takes a dog with dangerous potential and by not being alpha pack leader, or by purposeful training to be aggressive, or by NOT training properly, they cause a dog that COULD have been a good, friendly pack member, to be a vicious, aggressive, dangerous dog.

It's difficult. We can't label the real guilty party. So we label the dogs which are higher risk of being capable of being made dangerous.

No they shouldn't. The Rottweiler isn't a dangerous breed, the the right hands a Rottie is a gentle loyal ,companion. Their misfortune often is that they are a large, powerful dog that needs to be trained and well socialised. All too often stupid people (who lets face it) have no business owning any sort of dog, buy them for their size and/or reputation and don't bother with the training with inevitable results.

Incidentally more people are bitten by Jack Russel type dogs that by Rotties!

Never, rottweilers can be tamed and trained to be calm, obeying, and under control. Although, there are still people who own rottweilers and teach them to be aggressive for personal reasons like protection. My grandmother has a rottweiler and is bringing him up to be the playful, family dog he is today.
Although rottweilers have past for being dangerous and untame, that doesn't mean they arent bred today to be kind, obeying, and calm or playful. I believe it is all how u raise a dog from a puppy. If they a dog is beaten with a stick when it is a puppy to be trained, it might be terrified of sticks as an adult. It all depends.
