I believe they had soap back then. People did wash, at least they washed their feet, so I presume other body parts got cleaned once in a while...
The soap would have been harsh, like a lye soap, and he would have had to use a basin of well water. There was no such thing as a shower, or even indoor plumbing.

I would guess that he went t othe river near town, walked into it, then splashed his face with water. I don't think they had special face soaps back then.

Probably in a lake with fresh water. There was not as much pollution back then.
