Angels do appear to people. Mohammad was a person, just as I am. I have had several heavenly messengers appear to me. Am I special? No. Why is anyone chosen to receive such an honor? I'm not sure what the answer is, but I think faith has a lot to do with it. There are grains of truth found within all religions. God is known by many names and He has minions of angels. He is still the same, even when viewed and accepted in error.
Actually, Paul did start a new religion. Christianity for Gentiles. Many of the Christian churches have Pauline dogma and creeds.

Something that a professor told me years ago really stuck in my head. It was a comparative religion class. He told us this.
Any organized religion can only survive one generation. That after that generation passes it onto the next it is not the same religion anymore. This can be applied to any religion, I don't know a lot about Islamic faith, and I surely don't believe the mass-media's view of it. But the same can be said for Christianity as well. It has changed a lot in the past few hundred years. The same could be applied to any religion.

is Mohammed was so vile why is he the most influential man that ever lived on earth? why did is bring an end to slaves, to women being used as prostitutes? give equal rights to men and women? why do muslims give out the most charity in the world today? muslims follow the best examples. Mohammed was only here to preach the same message that was given before him, from Adam to Moses to Jesus. To believe in ONE god. As a muslim we all believe in the Torah, Gospel, Palms and Quran. It's just that the same messeage has not been changed and remains authentic.

At the time when the revelations began, Prophet Muhammad (God bless him and grant him peace) was one of the most respected people in Makkah. He was forty years old, married to a former widow fifteen years older than he, and had four children, all of whom were girls.
He was known in Makkah as "Al-Amin," which means, "The Truthful One." When people had disputes, they brought them to him to be settled, although he was not a tribal leader. When they had personal problems, they came to him for advice. At one point, he gave a judgment which prevented war between two tribes--they accepted his judgment although he was not the leader of any tribe.
The people of Makkah even stored their valuables with him--put them in his house for safekeeping. When, some years after the revelations began, his pagan enemies planned to killed him, he had to flee Makkah at night. The last thing he did before leaving was to arrange for his cousin Ali (God bless him) to return the valuables to their owners--the very people who had tortured horribly many of his friends and now were threatening his life. If he had been dishonest, he could have taken this treasure with him, but, instead, he did not leave town until he was assured that each of his enemies as well as each of his friends and relatives would received all of their valuables back.
In the Bible, Jesus, God bless him and grant him peace, describes the one who will come after him, naming him "The Spirit of Truth," or, in Arabic, "Al-Amin."
