Yes it does but that doesnt mean you should not try and gain muscle. You may drop a size but happen to be slightly heavier or not lost anything. If you want to loose weight then you limit the excercise and limit the food but if you want to loose fat then you limit the food.

As Steph has said, muscles weighs more than fat.
Effects are as follows:
Excess fat or muscle has consequences:
Excess fat - bad physical appearance, metabolic and cardiac disorders.
Excess muscle - good physical appearance, gives you a higher metabolic rate and strength, but can lead to osteoarthritis due to the excess weight (wear-and-tear of joints) which may lead to surgically replacing joints.
This is very summarized account of effects.

Yes. It is a well known fact that muscle weighs more than fat. If you are trying to re-shape your body with a combination of diet and excercise you may find that you gain weight while losing inches. High repetitions with low resistance/light weights if in the gym. Main thing is to exercise regularly and don't overdo it.

Yes, muscle weighs almost exactly 2 1/2 times more than fat. The rest of the answers are correct (so far) as well as far as picturing how it looks/works.

Muscle weighs more just as Steph said. What she didn't say is that even if you exercise and gain number on the scale. You look so much hotter because your body is healthier. I like people who are toned not flabby. The numbers on the scale don't represent how you look.

1 pound of muscle takes up less space than 1 pound fat. So if you are 150 pounds and mostly muscle you will be leaner than someone who is 150 pounds and mostly fat.
Think of popcorn. measure out 1 pound of unpopped popcorn and you have a small bag of corn kernels. But if you measure out 1 pound of popped popcorn then you have a huge bag of popped corn. They weigh the same but they look very different.

Muscle weighs more, but takes up less room, so if you were trying to lose weight and did exercise, you may actually gain weight (or the weight loss may not be very large) but have lost a clothes size/inches.

1lb of muscle weighs exactlly the same as 1lb of fat.
muscle just looks better. if you weight 10 stones and are muscular you may have a 24 inch waist, but if you are not toned it could be 32 inches.
