It will be a shared account with a 9 year old so has to be suitable.
which headset? do I have to use a skype headset??
I need to buy 2 so dont want to pay 20 pounds each.

Yes, Skype is safe to use and Spam free.
A good quality headset & microphone is mandatory, cheap ones sound awful. Go to the nearest computer store and ask them to let you listen to different ones. Brand names like Microsoft cost more than Labtec, for example, so listen to ones from all price ranges.
Then, buy the best you can afford that sounds good to you.

skype is spam free, completely controlable and great. I have used it for 3 years.
