Let me make one thing clear, I don't consider Atheism as a neutral position.
As I do often I pose a question in a certain way to get a variety of answers and thoughts.
I don't think that adherences and messages of support from 1 of 2 sides of an argument are
very interesting.
So I prefer to 'slightly' needle both sides.
I'm not sitting on the fence, I'm definitely an Atheist.

Atheism, like religion, can't be evil.
Only people can be evil or not.

See many people equate Atheism with evil because they take on a Christian mindset. They will often tell that the bible says either you are with me or against me. Now this statement is true but true followers Christ understand that Jesus came for those who do not know him so that they might be saved. Jesus message was and is the kingdom which includes everyone. I'm reading some of these answers and they come across as hateful and yet they are "Christian" can't you see why so many people run away from the Christian Church. God is love.Jesus said in loving kindness have I drown thee. News flash Jesus did come to start the Christian Church. It's about the Kingdom Culture of Heaven becoming the Kingdom-Culture on earth. This not an attack on Christians but I have learned the difference between religion and Church.

~~~ Fly ,,,, ANY heretical idea is deemed to be evil by the Dogmatic Principles of a religious believer. Most Respectfully you are mistaken in your assertion of atheism being " something as akin to neutrality" when we are Absolutely Contrary to the idea of theism. This is why these two terms, theism/atheism are only seperated by the prefix "a" which designates the meaning of "contrary to".
I wonder if it's an instinctive thing? As a child I remember watching my football team run out onto the field and they were the most amazing people I'd ever seen; tall, strong, good-looking and obviously fearless.
Then out came the opposition team. The dopiest, ugliest, dirtiest, most stupid looking bunch of idiots I'd ever seen.
(Don't hold me to account for those thoughts - but that really is how I felt way back then.)
Because many atheists are often the ones with the spine to point out that the emperor wears no clothes.
So the emperor paints these atheists as 'evil', and, by association, all atheists.
Also, a KEY point is the Us vs Them doctrine of Abrahamic religion.
There IS no 'neutrality'. If you are not 'with them' (a believer in Christianity or Islam) then you are AGAINST them.
That is the way they see the world via their books.
Agnostics are the neutral party.
Atheism has been hi-jacked for political purposes (starting with Marx), so now its purpose is to subordinate all individual religious thought to the service of the State.
It used to be a matter of individual freedom in the old, pre-ComIntern days, but modern Atheists are much more militant and remind me of some of their extreme religious counterparts.
This frightens many people.
Read the Christian, Jewish and Muslim "holy" books and you will discover plenty of answers to your question in black and white. These books are studded with hate filled admonishments that are designed to keep people in the fold and that direct hatred toward outsiders and especially those who think for themselves and refuse to swallow the fantasies in these books. For a selection of quotes from the bible refer to the Skeptics Guide to the Bible (look for the category intolerance). You will be amazed. You might also sample some of the hatred expressed towards non-belief in the ever popular Left Behind books by Tim Lahaye (sales of over 30 million books!!). And of course there are thoroughly warped people like Pat Robertson who spew their venom into our environment. Atheists represent a huge threat to believers of all stripes because they are taught this message from the time they are children.
I dont know that I would say neutral - I mean yes I think a lot of things in life are grey rather than black and white but then some things are black and white (ie completely wrong)
It is so much like the Bible - good (God)vs evil (Satan).
Religious people have had that drilled into them even before they could count to 10.
I am an atheist and there is not one bit of evil in me. I act like a good Christian should even though I am not one.
A lot of it is because atheism is the biggest threat to religion out there.
I don't believe that of Atheism but i do believe if you're fence sitting you are an agnostic.
Atheism has no room for a deity-nothing neutral there.
