Or do you think he was placed into office by man?

Jimmy, actualy I am an Atheist but I am sadly one of the few here that is accepting of beliefs other than my own. I am also sadly one of the few here on Q&A that is interested in other beliefs not for the search of the eternal question, what ever that may be, but for the reason that I would like to understand more of my fellow man.

Yuff, I was raised in a very orthodox Roman Catholic family. I went four years to a Roman Catholic all boy high school. I'm in my fifties now. I've also become an agnostic in my age. Personally, I think that Pope Ratzinger is a closet "homosexual". I realize I can't prove that. I also realise that ain't something nice to say? I also think, I pretty sure I'm right too?

Placed into power through God's will? Yuff, if you beleive in an a almighty God, then everything, every day, is His handiword?? What are you really asking?

Yes.

The college of cardinals ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit (God) during the Papal conclave.

A Papal Conclave works like this:

+ A pope dies and is buried

+ The cardinals come to Rome for the conclave that will elect the new pope. The word conclave (Latin, *** + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates:
. • The place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals under the age of eighty elect a new pope.
. • The actual gathering of the cardinals.

+ The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

+ The cardinals pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during a Mass

+ The cardinals, sealed in the Sistine Chapel, vote every morning and afternoon.

+ A two-thirds majority plus one is required for election for the first 30 ballots. After that, a simple majority is required.

+ After each vote, they burn the ballots and add special chemicals to make the smoke white or black.
. • Black smoke means no new pope yet.
. • White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

+ The cardinals may elect any baptized male they wish. There have been occasions in the past where they have elected a layman. After their election, the layman has to be ordained priest and bishop.

+ They ask the one elected if he accepts. The moment he accepts, he is pope.

+ The pope chooses his “Papal” name.

+ Then the new pope is announced to the world.

Like in many successions (but not in all) he was placed in position long before the previous pope died.
Since god does not exist he van not interfere in the election of the pope as well.

If the RCC cardinals really believed the holy spirit indicated the new pope, they could organise a public lottery anywhere in Rome. CNN would pay a lot for the rights.

Both
Pope Ben16 is certainly the type of Pope we need now:
devout,
learned
dedicated to orthodoxy

Not everyPope was put in through God's Will(Alex6 comes to mind) butThe office of Pope is Christ-founded and Holy Spirit-directed(the Pope has to pay attention ,of course)

I question whether or not he was placed into power at the blessing of the previous Pope. As for the election of the Pope being considered "God's will", you would have to be pretty silly to believe that. The process of becoming Pope requires no "Miracle confirmation".

I think he was placed there by God. I'm sure the Cardinals prayed and asked for guidance.

Even the couple of "bad" Pope's we've had, have served a purpose in the scheme of things. We cannot know why and what God does.

I think Pope Benedict is wonderful. He is reining in some very radical and dangerous non-Catholics who say they are Catholic. The Church needs to get back to the basics of worship, sacraments, prayers and education.

God's perspective and design is beyond our ability to see and comprehend. We trust in him and his promise that the gates of hell will not prevail against his Church.

There was never any pope in God's will. Christ told His followers that He would have no man 'lord' over them like the Gentiles.
