This is my husband's first re-enlistment. He was told that he had to wait until Dec. to re-enlist because his job was overmanned. His term ends in Feb. We only had 2 choices, we chose Florida. He is up for shore duty and the bases are reservists bases, and so there is no base housing and we have to find a place to live. If we are going to be here for awhile I would like to start my spring semester in college (I did my fall semester I just went back this year) here, but is there anyway to know? How long does it take for them to give us info? My husband says it is a slight chance they may keep him on the boat for awhile. He re-enlisted on Dec 21st. If anyone has any experience with this I would appreciate your help. It feels like we dont know what to be doing right now. Should I start classes or just be preparing to go to Florida?

Hon, the navy waits sometimes til the very last minute. My only advise to you is to hope for a smooth transition, but to expect the worst. Every guy up for shore duty on my hubbys crew, got extended to the ship. Anything can happen. Just be prepared! They give two weeks to find a place to live, start looking online, call the FFSC. Your local Housing office should be helping you out. They can tell you where they recommend to live even though they dont have base housing. They will advise you where NOT to live also. Do you have an Ombudsman? Talk to her, she can help you out also.

If his SHIP is going to extend him then it looks like he will be staying put for a while. HE can call his detailer and ask what is going on. DO NOT go buy or rent anything until he gets orders in hand though. If you do you will be screwed because the Navy may not send you where you are asking to go. Don't do anything about school either except maybe register to take more classes where you are currently living. The Navy does what the Navy needs to do when it comes to orders. There is no rules that help you out any. We got ordered in hand one week before PCS'ing two commands ago. Never plan anything until you physically have your orders in your hand though.

all you can do is make a decision about going back to school, and if the orders come down where you will be moving before the term ends, make the decision then whether or not to quit in the middle or finish it out and join him later..knowing that you will be maintaining 2 Households on FL BAH in the meantime.

We have gotten hard copy orders as close as 30 days prior to PCS.

Their is no set standard. I was originally set to transfer to my job in Washington D.C. this past June, than it was set for this comming March, now it looks like this comming June. My last ORDMOD (Order Modification) was decided by my command, called the detailer, and message on board in less than 2 hours.

No telling when dealing with the government. I learn this first hand. It happens when it happens.
