There are a lot of great restaurants in DC, and a lot of variety in tastes. Some of my favorite restaurants are cheesecake factory, maggianos, old ebbitt grill, nieshas, jandara, blackies, oceannaire, lebanese taverna, mccormick and schmick, lauriol plaza. DC is a great city and is very metro accessible. You can get to all the tourist spots by metro, which is recommended because parking downtown is horrible and expensive. A lot of the malls are also metro accessible. Were there any in particular you were considering? Pentagon city, Montgomery mall, wheaton plaza are all good malls that are accessible by metro.

You're not exactly clear here. But there is the Circulator Bus (www.dccirculator.com) that runs between Georgetown and Union Station, mostly along K Street, and the fare is $1. There's another Circulator route that runs between the convention center and the Southwest Waterfront, and a third that makes a loop around the Mall, but during the winter, it only runs on weekends. If you ride the bus, get a transfer; it will enable you to change buses without paying extra. Transfers are good for two hours.

For further bus and rail information, check out www.wmata.com.

Union Station does have a mall inside, but it's not very good, and you often have to fight people trying to get tickets for their train because of how it's set up. If you're looking for a nice mall that's easily Metro accessible, take the Blue or Yellow line to Pentagon City--there's a very nice four-story mall there and a smaller center across the street.

The Foggy Bottom station on the Blue and Orange lines is about eight blocks north of the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool, Vietnam Memorial, etc. To see the Washington Monument and World War II memorial, it's probably best to use the Smithsonian exit on the Blue and Orange lines. Wear comfortable shoes, as you will probably do a lot of walking.

You might want to consider doing one of the trolley tours to get a sense of the city, and it will get you close to some of the monuments that public transit doesn't.

As for best restaurant, that's entirely subjective and depends on what sort of food you like.

And don't even THINK of renting a car here. Traffic is crazy and parking is severely limited in most areas.

It's about 2-3 miles from the center of Georgetown to the monuments. About a mile from the edge of Georgetown (near the four seasons hotel) to the Lincoln Memorial.

Absolutely avoid car rental at all costs. Parking is impossible, driving is bad - we have the second worst traffic in the nation just a hair less terrible than LA. Don't drive here. I cannot express that strongly enough.

There is much to see and do throughtout. Best restaurants are legion, but the really top ones include Citronelle, Bistro Bis, Vidalia, I Ricci, Restaurant Nora, Zaytinya, Jaleo, Cafe Atlantico. Washingtonian Magazine just rated the top 100.

Union station is a beautiful old Beaux Artes building, with a small mall, lots of good places to eat.

Do not rent a car. You will never find parking.

Take a cab or bus from Georgetown to monuments. Metro doesn't run from Georgetown to monumnets. But once you are there, metro runs just about anywhere else.

DC is a great walking city.

restaurants: look http://www.washingtonian.com/index.html. Washingtonian mag just listed the best 100 restaurants. Plus they have a list of cheap eats, etc.

Also check out the Washington Post Weekend section. They list all the information on things to see, shows etc.
