i'm not muslim, but i want to see what it's like to wear a burka in public. i'm curious to see if people treat women in burkas differently or the same. would this be offensive to followers of islam? i certainly would not want to upset/insult anyone.

thanks =]

Difficult question.
It depends on the intention.
Burka is an act of faith in God, and obedience to Him.
I won`t be offended if you respectfully carry out the whole ordeal.
BTW wearing it just for one day will not tell you much .... its a lifestyle, you have to live with it to know the real essence.

Muslims have no problem with non-Muslims trying out Islamic dress. Many women have done what you you have asked.

While wearing the burka or head scarf, I would be very careful of the non-Muslims. Unfortunately is not uncommon for Muslim women to be harrassed.

People will treat you differently.

My friend wore a Hijab for the same reason. I was with her and the comments people made were horrible.

I couldn't imagine wearing a burka.

You know people are going to treat you differently, and any hope for people to treat you the same is naive and ridiculous.

However, if you wore a burka in jest, some would be offended. But if you're wearing it as a sign of modesty they wouldn't. However I would say this situation is in jest and not modesty.

Well, after us spartan lost to Persia, Alexander the great and the Macedonians succeeded and took over all of the Persian Empire and gave some parts to Sparta. We saw many greeks start to transfer to muslim cultures and many did start wearing burkas. Some found it offensive and felt we were mocking them and others didn't mind their culture going to greeks. So not all would find it offensive.

If you're intending on wearing a burqa to see what it's like to wear it in public for modesty,etc then no I wouldn't get offended at all . You're not upsetting or insulting any of us in any regard. I wear the burka myself. =)
