i am about to purchase a new 50" plasma tv
i notice alot of retailers selling plasma panels are the panels as good to use as a normal tv? what are the differences?

I prefer LCD screens. Both Plasma and LCD have their pros and cons.
Plasma screens are prone to burn out, when the same image is on the same part of the screen for a long time, as is the case in many of the digital programs where the Channel name is always displayed on the left upper corner of the screen.

Plasma and LCD are different technologies.
The LCD (liquid crystal display) screen operates by having each "pixel" become translucent to permit the light from a bright white bulb at the back to shine through. These screens are reliable and can give very good images and colour. If the bulb blows then the whole thing goes dark and you have to get a new bulb.
Plasma screens use minute cells of ionised gas to form each pixel. They are self illuminating so no bulb to fail. Unfortunately, if a single cell goes wrong you'll get a permanent black spot (or even white one) on your screen.
LCD screens become very expensive at sizes above 37". That's why larger screens are usually Plasma displays.
At normal viewing distances and under normal living room lighting conditions you'd have to try very hard to spot any difference between the two technologies.
Additional information.
It doesn't matter what the screen is made of: HD television reproduction will work the same.
All televisions have an analogue tuner and most sets these days will also have a built in Freeview (digital) tuner.

A plasma television has a built-in tuner, to receive programmes.
A plasma panel has no built-in tuner, so you need cable, Sky or Freeview to be able to watch TV programmes.

do not get a plasma TV the color and picture is more vibrant than LCD for only a few months then it all goes downhill, my plasma tv's pixels turn blue in dark scenes a lot and it's just total crap get an LCD while you still can

plasma ismade out of helium and in ten years we will use it all up and then no more plasma tv!
