Friend,
While writing (or dictating)Mahabharata Maharshi Veda Vyas in the beginning writes a sloka (verse ) as follows , in this Great Indian Epic in Sanskrit.
''Yadi haasti tad anyatra, yanney haasti na tat kvachid .''
That means , ''what you find in Maha Bharath , you may find else where in life (or in world), that which is not here , you will not find it any where ''
So it is such a bold challenge any writer.Mahabharata is the real Drama that happened between Pandavas and Kouravas .In Maha bhaarath all types of characters that we come across in life are seen. All types of situations we face are there. In what a person faces in life, there are reflections of all those with solutions. The Bhagavad geeta is the Brightest Gem in it that gives immense knowledge about everything in all situations.
So what you said , has been said by some one and I feel ,who ever he was , he was right.

Great answers by our friends on yahoo answers ,Keshav, Radhakrishn, Sreenivasa and Charan..nothing to add really .But amidst great contributions I wanted to add a bit. The story can be read and interpreted at any level .Charectars vis-a-vis others had been discussed and apart from a true timeless reflection of society any where in the world it also is a symbolic representation of a single individual too! Kauravas represent the evil, with duryodhana intolerance ,greed to stick to power ,jealousy but mixed with noble quality of not caring for caste or creed and appreciating true talent ,Dusshasana for following wrong orders, Yudhishtira for all efforts atleast at times by humanbeings to do something lawful and just ,Bhimarjunas for muscle and technical expertise and Nakula Sahadeva for cattle rearing etc., controlled by elder brother - law within and so on .The conflict represents the war of thoughts of good vs bad within oneself. The universality of its application is at individual ,society ,country ,world level and any time and different levels of human thought too. The stages of life of an individual also can be similarly traced through various events the childhood ,the youth ,the vices of dice the woman loss of prpoperty through vices ,fight to regain it , a mundane and spiritual battle that man has to wage throught life. . God ofcourse siding with the lawful inspite of aberrations and getting evil defeated or killed by every possible method.

Mahabharata is full of characters of good, bad and evil. Each caharcter has a particular role. kauravas were embodiments of all that is evil on earth and Pandavas are embodiments of virtue. Panadvas were associated with Krishna the god incarnate and they won ultimately. The great epic is story of mankind depicting the victory of virtue over evil.

just take any human emotion and you will find it in mahabharata.
just take any situation a person is likely to face in their lives and you will find it there.
there is deceit, jealousy, anger, fear, ignorance, revenge, dilemma,.......... the list of negatives is endless.
there is love, pious, sense of duty, bhishma, god, god's message,........... the list of positives is endless.
for any body to understand mahabharata one needs to go beyond the characters.
take bhishma for instance. he vowed to be a bachelor and protect kauravas at all costs. because of the quality of later generation kauravas he did not change his decision, nor did he break his vow. he fought on the wrong side knowing fully well that they were wrong. and died.
each individual when they take decisions in their lives, goes through the same process. bhishma's life tells us the difficulties one faces if you stick to your decisions and much more.
these lessons are endless. that is why mahabharata is known by these words u quoted.
