If you took (what I'm assuming is) a 9mm (I don't know much about guns...) and put it under your chin and pulled the trigger, would you die instantly? Like, would you feel ANY pain at all?

I'm not asking this because I want to kill myself or anything... My dad committed suicide in this manner in September and really wanna find comfort in the fact that he felt no pain when he did this...

matman: Nobody heard it... His best friend found him the next morning. The blood was dry when he found him so we're not sure exactly when he did it.

My mom was trying to convince me to go see him that night cause I hadn't been able to get a hold of him for a while and I'm SO GLAD I didn't go over there... I would have been the one to have found him.

To feel pain would have been impossible. The speed at which the bullet traveled would be faster than the pain signal could have completed its route. You see the signal goes from the spot where pain occurred, to the brain, and then the brain sends a signal to that spot telling it to feel pain. A bullet travels at a few hundred m/s. In other words there is no way he felt pain, and if he did it would have been too short to even realize what it was.

In the manner you described one may sometimes die instantly and sometimes not instantly. It isn't cut & dry. I don't see how knowing he felt no pain will give you any comfort when you don't seem to understand the pain he felt that would have caused him to do it in the first place. The pain he felt to make him decide to end his life would have been exponentially more than anything he felt after he pulled the trigger. How bad were things to cause him to do it? All that matters now is he is gone and right now isn't feeling anything at all.

I think it depends on his "Luck" with his aim. It is possible to do instant/fatal damage with that caliber at that range but if he was off by even a few centimeters he could have been aware until he lost enough blood to pass out before dying.
Was anyone around to hear the shot? how long between pulling the trigger and being found?
take peace in the fact that what ever was causing him so much pain in this world that he felt that he had to leave it-is not causing him anymore pain.

There would have been such an overwhelming force, that death would have been instant and painless for him.

I wish that you had had no pain, because of it.

By the way for others reading this. Suicide attempts like this do not always work. Sometimes the angle of the gun is off and just part of the cheek bone is hit, or the eye, or just the front of the brain. The person lives.

You would be better off seeking grief counseling. Every community has this as an option. Contact your local county hospital and request their information. You should do this today, they have a 24 hour hot-line nationwide. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I'm pretty sure if he hit his brain stem then he would have died within seconds and the gunshot wound would have caused him to go into shock which would prevent him feeling any pain.. You know like if you hurt yourself really badly it's numb for a few minutes.

most likely yes(die instantly), unless you point the gun at a angle, and then misses the brain. sorry to hear about your father, but you should take solace in the fact he most likely did not suffer
