I read an answer from one of my previous questions which said in Islam a woman is not supposed to change her surname after marriage. Is that true? If so, why?

I think it is because the surname is recognition through blood line thus your fathers name. In the western world when a woman takes her husband's last name it is done as a sign of respect and love. The idea is that when a woman marries she leaves her family and her husband becomes her new family. I'm sure it initially had to do with possession as everything that belonged to the woman passed to her husband upon marriage.

Married women taking their husbands last name is a very common culture in the western world. But in Spain and the countries of Spanish America are "western" countries and in the Spanish tradition, married women retain their birth names (and pass them on to their children though not their
grandchildren).

In many Muslim Middle Eastern countries, Iran,Yemen, Jordan, Syria, women do not change their name after marriage. Such an action requires court action and a justification other that wanting one's husband name. Even in conversation and convention a women may be called Mrs."Husband name of husband," legally she retains her name which is her father's last name.
