My husband had asthma as a kid. His parents put him in swimming. It helped increase his lung capacity. Now he surfs. He hasn't needed his inhaler in years.

Asthma is a severe form of an allergic reaction, which you can't prevent since allergens are all around us. But you may be able to lessen the symptoms some of the time. For instance, if you have cats or dogs, make sure they stay out of your child's room, and vacuum or mop daily. You may need to buy a vacuum cleaner with extra help for allergies, so they remove dust mites.

Also make sure you wash all bedding regularly - sheets and pillowcases weekly, of course, at the highest possible temperature, but blankets and pillows should also be washed at least every two or three months to get rid of any dust. Soft toys that can be washed should also go through the washing machine; if your child has soft toys that are not washable, put them in the freezer for four or five hours once a month as that also kills dust mites.

Also watch your child's diet. Fizzy drinks (soda/pop/whatever you call them) can make allergies worse. So can dairy products, so it's worth trying alternatives as cow's milk in particular can increase mucus production and make asthmatic reactions far worse than they would otherwise be.

You can't. Once your child has asthma they have it for life. You can keep it from getting out of hand. Purchase an in home air purifier and one for the child's bedroom. Keep a cool mist humidifyer going in child's room and keep a steam vaporizer handy for when child gets congested. Invest in a good vacuuming cleaner with a Hepa filter. Get rid of mold if it is anywhere in your home. Keep dust to a minimum (this means dusting more often). At night keep his closet doors closed (man made fibers in clothing emit chemicals that the child can breath in) cut back on milk and milk products as they cause phlegm. Make sure the child gets plenty of exercise to keep the lungs healthy.

there not much you can do from stopping it being asthma, you either have it or you don't, you should probably get your kid tested, its just simply blowing into a machine that figures out stuff like that, Had the same problem a two year ago playing football, couldn't stop coughing, and doc told me I have sports induced asthma, also I was alergic to the field turf, so maybe the kid is just allergic to something

Its nothing you can do if its asthma. You will probably know soon and if it is get the kid on a preventive medicine like Pulmicort or Flonase so that he dosn't have an Asthma attack.
