I found Jody 5 months ago and today she has her first heat, I'm debating right now whether I should get her spayed. It's not monetary issue but I do not trust the vets here. Even my own vet has a bad track record with spaying. The vets here, (I'm not in the states right now but in south east asia) seems a bit unqualified especially when it comes to this kind operation and I'm really not trying to be mean, there are not many vets around here too, only 4 vets for the whole island. I'm really worried bout Jody and I have 3 other male dogs (3 yrs old) who don't seem interested in Jody or any other bitches even though they are in heat. I didn't neutered my male dogs too because of the same risk that is involved and I love them too much to send them to undergo the operation when I don't trust the vets. I've asked around and read the disadvantages of not getting my pets fixed which can lead to health issues when they are older, so right now I'm really torn. Please advice. Thank you.

Please I'm not trying to insult all the vets in Asia and saying that those back in the states are better or more qualified, I'm referring only specifically on my own worries about my dogs and I'm really scared with all the unsuccessful operations done over here. I can't send my little girl and my boys to someone that I don't trust because I only fear of their safety. I just really need to know whether not sending them which I'm more incline of doing would not be something selfish that is out of my own fear of the actually the high risk of losing them now and I'm scared that my decision would lead to them later on suffering with any kind of diseases when they grow older. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for answering but I decided that I wont risk it. The vets available here are almost all involved in dog fightings and I rescued my boys and Jody from the ring (there are pit bulls), my boys were to be 'champions' and Jody was trained to fight too and I bought them and we had to beg to have them but I couldn't save them all. I feel very helpless and it's a real cruel thing, all the gambling and it's really sick! We have a big compound here and I don't think I will be able to get my dogs back to the states because I would be staying here for a long term project. But thanks to all, I really hope my boys and my girl will live a long and healthy life and I just can't send them to vets with bad facilities and without any animal loving nature, I don't trust them. My own vet is the only one who has a decent clinic set up and is not involve in all those dog fighting crime but he is just seriously bad in performing operations. So thanks to all! Happy New Year!

I wouldn't do it if i didn't fill that it was safe. Yes there is a chance that they can get cancer in the further, but the way the vets sounds there i would not do it. The chances of them getting cancer is not that high. In the past nobody ever had their dogs fixed and they was usually fine other then there is now a over population of dogs. The way it sounds the chances of them not making it threw the surgery out ways the cancer or any other problem that they can get. Simple if it's that bad there don't do it. Just keep your dogs away from each other while she is in heat. You are going to have to be responsible for the dog not getting pregnant.

We can't POSSIBLY advise you as to whether a particular vet thousands of miles away is or is not safe.
Anyone who has "au naturelle" pooches of BOTH sexes needs escape-proof runs as well as dog-proof fences. But that takes time to build.

If you are REALLY concerned about EVERY vet within reach then, provided none of your males is a cryptorchid, I would say get the males neutered NOW - the operation is simpler and therefore safer than is a spaying. In addition, operations on a ****** WHILE SHE IS ON HEAT are a bad idea - too much risk of internal bleeding; you should wait about a month after the end of her season before having her spayed.
She should be spayed, but it should be planned, not a rush job WHILE she is in heat, regardless of how much you do or don't trust your vet.

The only male I've had neutered came home and immediately proceeded to hump his sister - which DID cause some bleeding in his scrotum but not so much as to be dangerous.

Even vets spread an amazing number of old wives' tales about how good neutering is. However, in the last couple of years there has been research done, that has found that the ONLY guaranteed advantage of neutering a dog or a ****** is that it won't produce puppies, and that the ****** won't drip blood any more. It has also found that there is a range of possible consequences, depending on the age at which the pooch was neutered. This link: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Neutering_001198315291/ will take you to a set of links giving you that research plus photos of actual neutering operations.

I refuse to live where snow lies on the ground.
You should refuse to live where there is no vet that you trust.

I sympathize, I live in a highly populated area with lots of vets, however I have concerns about their abilities. Vets will suggest treatments and operations simply because they want your money. For various health reasons (of which I am sure you will be aware of) I think that a ***** should be spayed.

I think that spaying in a fairly simple operation. Is there a veterinary school in your area? they might be more qualified.

You say that you are not in the states now, this suggests to me that you may be moving back. If your male dogs are not interested in Jody and if you are worried about the abilities of the vets on your island, you could wait until you move back to the states.

Or perhaps you are just a loving owner who is worried about ANY operation for their beloved dogs. Because you are such a caring owner, is it possible that you could take her and your other dogs off the island to a vet that you can trust.

Being stressed about your dogs is hellish. If you cannot resolve this dilemma forget it. I admire the fact that you can cope financially with your dogs needs, however spaying is not vital.

I despair of dogs owners who buy a dog without considering veterinary costs, however you have a different issue.

Good luck

Keep your little girl dog separated from the boys until she is no longer in heat. After that, I would consider visiting the local vets in your area and just ask them about the procedure. Ask them if you can see the facility and where your dog would be kept for recovery. Is the facility clean and sterile, does it seem well kept? Is the vet helpful in easing your concerns? If the vet will not take the time to talk to you and ease your concerns, then move on to a different facility. That one is not the one for you. Also, research how much it would cost to take your dogs to a different country to be spayed and neutered. I am not sure if that is feasable for you, but if you are able to do so that might be your best bet. Good luck.

P.S. I found this website, its cute...could help for your situation.

3 male dogs one female, you don't want your female having litter after litter of puppies. If I were you I would have your female spayed and if your scared of the operation wait until you can get to a vet you trust for your males. I know it sounds selfish or wrong to have the female spayed but it's either the one female or all 3 of your males? Chances are better sending in one dog than 3. A female having litter after litter of pups will not only lead to more stray or pound dogs, but if the female has too many litters too quickly it will tear her down. You don't want that and saying your male dogs aren't interested in a female in heat is like saying if you were naked and walked in front of a guy he wouldn't try to look or get his freak on with you. It is a male dogs nature to hump a female in heat. If you don't want puppies having 3 males get your female spayed. If you had one male and 3 females I would say get the male fixed. However if your female is not spayed she gets out the yard when she is in heat or out of the house what will stop another male from mounting her? It is not just about her, what will you do with the 8-12 puppies that pop out of her if she gets pregnant? Look at it this way if your dog does go in for the operation and she don't make it through it would that be more or less devastating then seeing your female have 8-12 puppies that had to be taken to a pound, or stray dogs that turn wild and mean. You are not being selfish you love your dogs, you don't want to send them to a butcher which is what you feel you would be doing. Take the female in have her spayed. Chances of losing a dog getting spayed is very uncommon.

I am really sorry, it sounds as though you have to make a hard decision.

I had a client who once moved to a small island in the pacific, and had the same problem once her female dog came into heat. She had a lot of problems with the local stray males trying to get to her female. So she got what is called “B-itch Britches” (lol name still cracks me up). They are a panty/nappy type thing you put them on your female while she is in season to help SLOW down males. It isn’t a chastity belt, it’s not fool proof, and if given the chance a male dog could easily still get her pregnant. But it definitely could be better than nothing (plus she’ll look super stylish lol). It worked a treat for my client. These are easily found online by googling.

I am not sure if your vets would have them there but you could also look into a Deslorelin implant which temporarily blocks testosterone production in male dogs. With the pituitary gland suppressed, your male dogs would have no sex drive, releasing no testosterone and producing no sperm, thus avoiding any unwanted pregnancies. These are implanted under the skin, much like a microchip. These last for 6 months and we currently have a few clients who swear by these.

As for future health problems, if you can get your dogs desexed as soon as you find a reputable vet or clinic it will greatly reduce their risk of future health concerns. In males these are prostate problems and perianal and testicular tumors. As for females, they are at a lesser risk of mammary tumours, ovarian cancer and uterine infections if speyed before their first heat. But even though your b-itch has had her first heat, being desexed will still lessen her chances of getting one of these conditions. Pyometra are a major risk to undesexed females, which is basically an infection in the uterus, which then gets full of pus. It is life threatening and can be an expensive surgery.

Good luck!

I have to say, I would just keep them separated for the next 3 weeks, crates are a good way to do this. If your really careful you should make it out ok. It sounds to me like the risk of surgery is greater than the risk of any disease. You can try getting ahold of the SPCA closest to you and seeing if they know of anybody they can safely spay/neuter your dogs. It's better to be safe than sorry, and honestly you sound like your trying to do the best thing for your pets. Just keep them away from each other as best you can. If you have a string bikini bottom, you can put a maxipad in it and tie both back strings together and the front strings together, wrap them around the dog of course....

i found out female canines tend to ask your self whilst they're in warmth so be certain to maintain a robust eye on her. i did no longer spay my schnauzer and concept if I continually watched her when I enable her outdoors she may be secure. I became far off from the window for a 2nd when I enable her out and when I appeared back the buddies poodle exchange into locked onto her, in case you understand what I propose. till your canines is spayed stay at her area whilst she is going into warmth in case you haven't any longer have been given a fenced in backyard. i spotted whilst my canines exchange into in warmth she licked her swollen vulva lots. I made some little pants for her to placed on so she does no longer stain the carpet. stable success.
