If it was me, I would choose the Olympus Evolt 510. The reason is first that I already have an Olympus Evolt 500, and I really love it. But, the 510 is blur proof, and that is so much better. I just recently learned about the 510 the other day, and it really impressed me. I chose the 500 because the 510 did not exist yet when I got my camera, and I also chose it because I wanted a Digital SLR, and I am not professional, but I am certainly hoping to become professional. I also chose it, because it came with two lenses, instead of just one or none, like many other DSLRs. I can not advice you on different point and shoot cameras because I don't know anything about them. However, if you really want a point and shoot camera, then one of the most important considerations is how many mega pixels it has. The higher the number of mega pixels, the better quality the pictures. *sm*

You've already got a lot of recommendations for Canon cameras. There's a good reason for this: they make great cameras. Canon cameras are also well built and their support is excellent.
I personally currently own four Canons (I just sold one!) I wouldn't consider anything else.
Olympus cameras are nice point-and-shoot cameras, but their build quality and image quality is not top tier.
Here's a handy table that compares the Canon A650 IS to the Olympus FE-240. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_a650is%2Coly_fe240&show=all
There really is no comparison. The Canon has much higher resolution, has a wider ISO range, a better metering system, it has an optical viewfinder (and the Olympus doesn't!), a faster lens, a wider zoom range, and more.
The Canon wins, hands down.

I think you will be very disappointed if you bought the Olympus FE240. Not only does it suffer quite badly from shutter lag (which means it's very slow) but it also has poor image quality (see first review below which gives it 5/10 for image quality).
Olympus is not a brand of compact camera I would ever consider. It's image quality is it's biggest letdown.
The Canon A650IS (or Canon in general) is the camera which has by far the better image quality...

I prefer Canon Cameras. I had an Olympus Stylus and I did not like it! Canon's take much better pictures. They are clear, sharp and in good focus. I would go with that it would more than suit your needs

Since you will be taking pictures only on social occassions, just get a 5 mega pixel with a 28mm wide -angle lens, which will be helpful to 'get' everyone in.
Most current digital cameras will give good enough quality pictures, even if prints are enlarged considerably.
Save your money for a time in the future when you may wish to have higher grade equiptment which incidentally will be relatively 'cheaper' at that point of time.

I myself prefer Canon over any other brand.
I used to work in a photo lab developing digital photos and selling digital cameras and from experience canon's produce good photos and we hardly ever had any canons being returned,we had lots of olympus's being returned because they were faulty.
I have two canon cameras myself,a little 3mp one to take day to day shots and a huge 10mp slr one to do my arty shots and i love them both.

Get a Yashica camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. All cameras are relatively good, but they produce superior quality prints with a superior lens. The Carl Zeiss lens is the best in the business. It's like stereo speakers and sound. If you want superior sound, you buy Bose. For photographs, you buy any camera with a Carl Zeiss lens.
