Leaves are green because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment reflects green light back into our eyes, making it appear green.

Leaves actually used to be a pale white color. Then one day all the leprechauns had a meeting to discuss the scarcity of gold. The whole leprechaun race was floundering because they were being caught too easily and robbed of their gold. The bright green leprechauns contrasted greatly with the white leaves and, being so easily spotted, were not match for their human counterparts. They devised a curse to make all plant leaves the same green as they were. That way it would be much easier to avoid those greedy humans. However, they as they concentrated their fairy magic they realized that they did not have enough gold and magic dust to curse all leaves forever. In the end they could only make leaves green for half the year. During autumn the leprechauns resolved to be much more careful. They are a thriving population now, financially secure and with a growing economy in the production breakfast cereals. They would not be here today without the curse of the green leaves.
No but seriously. Chlorophyll A & B act like prisms that separate light into all colors of the visible spectrum. These chemicals allow only blues, reds, oranges, and yellows to pass through the leaf. The remaining green wavelength is refracted back at the source of light and straight to our visual sensory receptors where the wavelength of refracted photons is perceived as the color green.

Plants eat red and blue. The green is just the leftovers.

Not all leaves look green. There are also other pigments in the leaves besides chlorophyle. (I love misspelling!)
